American cities are getting competitive in terms of pay. According to a new report by Hired, tech employees in Austin received the largest average salary increases between 2016 and 2017, followed by Chicago, New York, Washington D.C. and the San Francisco Bay Area. The average global salary for tech workers now sits at $135,000 a 5% increase from 2016, says the company."

Yes, but factor in the cost of living and it becomes far less impressive.

You are reading it backwards, it is saying that the $116k in DC is the equivalent of $148k in San Fran dollars.
