(a proof is a coin the mint makes for collectors that have a special strike. devices(raised surfaces) are frosted and fields(blank spots) are deep and shiny)

So that's what that is. I once had a customer pay for a pack of cigarettes with a whole lot of these. At first I thought they were fake since there were so many, I guess she just took somebody's collection to satisfy her vice.

They also make silver proofs but this is not.

yeah, proofs look fake, but its a special mint strike to get the sweet look. Honestly i guess it isnt a surprise these end up in circulation since they are legal tender. but it just seems odd since they are specifically for collectors

that woman likely did steal a collection or had em and was broke.

Actually if you ever need to tell if a coin is silver rather than nickel copper clad:

youre looking for those grey/white edges. so stack em up, flip them on their side and check. any sort of copper color and its clad.

would be hilarious if that woman did pay with all silver proofs. she could have gotten way more money going to a pawn shop since the silver content is a few bucks alone(and thats gauranteed value so to speak, not speculative like collector value)

oh another thing:

if somebody pays with a US coin you think could be fake, always accept it and buy it out of the drawer. the most you lose is a dollar(in the case of dollar coins) Well maybe not always, depends on what it is you have.

It could be a weird but legal coin worth a lot of money. highly valuable errors include coins struck on the wrong composition planchet(such as a penny that should be zinc struck on a copper planchet), double denomination coins(such as a penny on one side a dime on the other), and a coin struck on the wrong size planchet(such as a quarter struck on a nickel sized planchet).

I actually have no idea but it happens to bills too. in one episode of pawn stars a guy came in with a "30 dollar bill"

one side was a 20, another a 10. these are called mule cents or mule dollars. extremely valuable. his was valued by the "lemme call a buddy" buddy at around 30-40 thousand.

How much is it legally worth? $20 or $10?

Well im not sure. IF one of the two sides is the face with the serial numbers i'd imagine that denomination.

if both sides on it are the backs or both sides have serials then idk.

turns out for one of the more famous mule examples a quarter struck on a sacagawea dollar planchet the mint made a mistake where an out of service sacagawea die was replaced incorrectly with a quarter die. thousands were made but the mint discovered the fuckup and destroyed most of them. but 16 got out somehow.

and one man owns 12 of them, paying well over 100K for a few.
