How the hell do you even use this site? Do people seriously sift through discussions with thousands of comments? I've heard the discussion is better than gamefaqs but every thread seems like it gets hijacked by a dumb meme

The site is so simple to use even a monkey could use it.

Reddit is far better for asking questions, news, etc. No its not as good for an ongoing discussion as gamefaqs or 4chan

I don't get how it's so damn popular. And the layout might be basic, but it sucks. It reminds me of reading youtube comments

A lot of its pros are tied into how popular it is, since that means that you get AMAs with real celebrities and power players all the time.

To the former, the site is incredibly easy to use. If you don't want to 'sift', then you simply look up things that interest you and subscribe. I literally got my mother, who is in her 50's, hooked on it by suggesting she use it to look up DIY and craft stuff. On top of that, the front page will filter out stuff based on pages you visit, so it gets better the more you use it.

As to the latter, it depends entirely on what subreddits you visit. Some are good, some are not. Some are mostly memes, some are mostly discussion. It just depends. The whole 'downvote/upvote' system works, but it reflects the particular communities that the subreddit is catering to. You'll find boards pretty much across the spectrum as far as quality goes.

I'd actually disagree since Reddit has some very ridiculously specific subreddits. I'll give you that it's design is initially quick jarring, though.

Wtf lol I've never gotten a discussion on Reddit before without having a billion people interject and derail. Like every topic, unless you write an absurd yell-into-a-bottomless-hole style walls of text, can only really have a single answer and a bunch of meme comment on that answer.

Whereas here, unfortunate as it is that we have the oddest restrictions and freedoms, every single topic is much like a discussion, and we adhere to that single topic that entire topic. Derailing doesn't ever go too far, and expanding upon that topic is a bit easier.

We also don't ever need to write more than a sentence or post some elaborate pic to make a topic without having an army call you out for... laziness? The fuck, it's an internet forum

A specific sub reddit doesn't do anything for the fact the design is abhorrent garbage for actually talking to people. Nor the upvote/downvote system that does nothing but filter out anything disagreed with.

Yeah, and say you were in a subreddit with fewer people and more people willing to discuss, you still won't have a discussion due to the pigeonholed topic quantity and people generally being used to the format of like 1 serious post per topic

Reddit's layout allows for branching discussions, GameFAQs's linear message list doesn't accommodate that. It's not hard.

It's not branching discussions, it's an endless sea of schisms that become essentially direct messages.

If someone says something in a topic on reddit, and gets a response, that becomes a separate comment chain, and this happens for EVERY reply. Trying to return to a topic and make sense of what new has even been said is a total trainwreck as a result due to it all being stupidly fragmented.

A message board layout is far superior to actually talk to people and discuss something, unless all you care about is a bunch of isolated singular back and forths with one person. If you want that, you can easily simulate it by just PMing everyone your reply with a little link-back to the post of theirs it's in reply to.

I've never been modded and banned for something incredibly silly on reddit, so that's one thing it has over this site.

At least with the puns people try to come up with something clever whereas on CE you have people just quoting the second post for the entire topic.

No, no, no, DarkDragon. There is no originality on reddit. All of the jokes are reposts from months ago and every pun has been made. The same three types of comments frequently top every post and the hive mind runs everything. Reddit has, without a doubt, the worst community on the internet.
