Imagine if during the throne room scene from RotJ it while the Emperor is giving his evil speech Luke just stuck his fingers in his ears and went "lalalalalala I can't hear you lalalalalalala." That's the type of juvenile humor that the newer movies fall back on constantly, and we're all supposed to laugh because "haha it's so quirky and awkward!"

There is nothing wrong with humor in movies, but you have to know when and when not to use it.

When Kyle Ren first steps on screen in VII, it's treated as a serious moment; Ren is going to interrogate Poe. The lighting is dark, the only source of light being the fire. This is our first introduction to one of our big bads, and the scene is immediately ruined by Poe making a stupid quip. All the tension is lost. In fact, Ren is made the butt of a lot of jokes throughout the film. How am I supposed to take the villain seriously when the writers clearly don't? Every scene is treated like a setup for a punchline, almost like it's a comedy and not Star Wars.
