He was nice to people and worked hard to take care of my mom and her siblings. He never hurt anyone in his life. He wasn't a raging racist it was a subtle thing. If you brought up Japan he'd get testy and he was convinced when I went there that they would brainwash me

First of all, although your grandfather's aversion for the Japanese does share some roots with racism, ultimately there's an important difference. This is more hatred for a nationality, maybe even a culture. Sad and regrettable, but not quite the same. Did your grandfather hate the Chinese, the Koreans, the Vietnamese and the Cambodians, too? Did he hate all people of some race or ethnicity, regardless of their nationality?

But more importantly, NO amount of goodness in ANY racist is an excuse for their racism. This isn't a "black and white view of the world", this is common sense and decency for a human being. The belief that there is something inherently bad in just being born a certain race or ethnicity is nothing but pure ignorance.
