My old housemate took a few years living in Mexico and came back speaking fluent spanish with a serious taste for all things chilli.

He then met the most gorgeous french girl...who couldn't even handle cracked pepper on her food without crying. That relationship didn't last long.

Acidic stuff really irritates my mouth and stomach. If I eat spicy stuff it goes right through me.

Because I want to savor the taste of my food and I can't do that if I'm too busy frantically trying to swallow it because it's burning the inside of my mouth

Plus having to punctuate every bite with water is annoying and fills me up more quickly

What I have encountered though was a chef who rolled his eyes when I brought this up because so many guys (and usually only guys) are in a hurry to ruin a perfectly delicious meal in the effort to make it so spicy you can't taste anything else. I had to take his point tbh, as I was about to throw some carolina reaper sauce into a curry he made.

Spicy food is good stuff, generally if my food is available in spicy that is what I order, 90% of the time whatever the hottest variant is (in america anyway)

However there is a point where you are just trying to prove your manliness, once the taste is gone (getting in extract territory here) and it's just pure heat you no longer are enjoying your food. You are simply trying to prove how manly you are because you can eat something with no flavor that is very very hot.

I'm white and have always thrown chili flakes, jalapenos, and habaneros on everything I eat without problems. I dated a girl from Mexico for a while and I swear she would think breakfast cereal was too spicy. Makes for a funny anecdote.
