boggles the mind that there are people who find the act of being scared or startled to be pleasurable experiences

This, although even the best horror movies typically have a jump scare or two. It's too common a trope.

One or two is okay. But when that is the whole base of their "scare factor" you know it's a pretty shit film.

Games are different because you're actively participating in the horror, so it's a lot more engaging and scary than, say, passively reading or watching something scary. Generally, that is. Also, you'd be surprised at just how scary some games can be even if you're the type of person that consumes horror media on the average and has been pretty desensitized to it. Scratches is my 'go to' game for this example.

I don't get scared by them, so I watch horror movies that are good movies altogether

Exactly this.
The right way to do horror is to let that unease and tension build and build, until every turn of the corner has the viewer worriedly thinking "THIS is where it's gonna jump out." Not just have shit jump out every few seconds.

Even better is to focus on ideas which will linger in the viewers' minds long after the film is over, not cheap shock in general. Make me feel existential dread.

You guys misunderstand. I'm into horror. I just find it funny how scared other people get of horror to the point where they won't even watch/play it.

I hate to be scared but I love the suspense of a good written horror flick that creates attachment to the actors and story

Nowadays they just result to jump scares. Pretty shitty

Thrillers are brilliant, one of my absolute favourites, but slashers? Hate them with a passion.

They do nothing for me. They don't thrill me, they don't scare me, they don't entertain me... it's just like watching a film full of disgusting/disturbing shit that serves no purpose other than to fuck you up by desensitisating you to things that you should never be desensitised to.

Probably the only time I've ever got genuinely angry at a film was when I watched one of the Saw films with my mate at uni. Normally I hate banning stuff for the sake of it... but why do they even let people see this kind of thing?

The first one I always thought was actually good, but everything after is schlock.
