I have a Leatherman multitool that has a small 2.5" knife as one of the tools:
qfslMMH

They told me I cannot bring it into the memorial. I tried to be rational with them, and the security officers called the nearby police officers over. The officers told me they could either confiscate this multitool and arrest me (because the knife on it can be considered a gravity knife which is illegal in NYC), or I can lock it away at the guest counter, enter the memorial, and get it back when I exit.

..........seriously? How is a multitool illegal?

Bah.

It isn't a ridiculous request. There's a knife on the multitool. Just check it in and pick it up when you leave. What's ridiculous is that you think it's such a hassle to acquiesce to a simple request for safety purposes.

You don't find it ironic you're complaining about how a multitool isn't really a weapon when planes were hijacked with box cutters?

calling the cops just cause you were debating them is uncalled for. when I was going to the UK, my sister's passport was expired and we didn't notice til boarding. we had to stay behind 24 hours and fix it. I was talking to my parents and trying to get one of them to board with me and the other parent and my sister could meet us the next day in England. while talking about this, the airport thought I was mad at THEM and called security to stand nearby in case I caused trouble. luckily I didn't notice this and never even knew about it till years later when my mom told me. people are such babies and they summon the cops long before they need to. and sometimes, the sight of the cops can backfire and set off a person who wouldn't otherwise have exploded.

What was so ridiculous about checking it and getting it back? No reason you need a multi-tool in the memorial, and the law is there for safety purposes. Which is not unreasonable given, you know, the history of that site.

he did. his beef is with the employees calling the cops on him over a simple debate. he did hand it over finally when the cops came. also we shouldn't always blindly follow the cops. what about the cops in 1930's/40's germany? should they have been blindly followed?

Never question authority. Bend over backwards if a cop asks you too.

I doubt he broke the law. Cops were just flexing their power. If he broke the law the cops would have arrested him right then. If it was an illegal weapon he wouldn't have been let off with the illegal weapon in hand.

If you've got a problem with an officer or his orders, by all means go file a complaint. More people should, it would cut down on bad cops. However, arguing with a cop on the street is going to earn you nothing but an asskicking and possibly an arrest.

This must have been quite the dillemma for you. Do you attack the liberal concept of gun-free zones, or do you vouch for the effectiveness of certain weapon laws to defend power-tripping cops?

Not a dilemma at all. No one is requiring you to visit the 9/11 memorial. But if you are going to visit, maybe follow the clearly marked safety guidelines lines meant to prevent another terrorism attack at a place that is a known target for terrorists.

I didn't say you were going to hijack a memorial. My point is that, while you may think it isn't a weapon because you didn't intend to use it as such doesn't mean that other people might not see it that way.

For example, a box cutter isn't a very formidable weapon. However, there's no doubt it can cause damage. Your multitool is in the same category. It really isn't a difficult concept.
