I don't know why it took me so long to get into this show. I just got done with season 4 and it's amazing how fast-paced the show is, how little filler there is, and how much crap they try to get away with to shock you. It's like, nothing is too taboo for that show. You also really get a feel for the characters.

Also, once you've thought they've tackled every possible plotline or character development with a particular character, they take it one step further. Specifically with Frank and Fiona.

Here's my question, though. Without any spoilers, does this show drop in quality like Dexter did in its first 4 seasons? I've heard that's a recurring issue with long-running Showtime shows. Dexter's the only other Showtime show I've seen.

Honestly, my main problem is that the characters don't experience any growth. They make the same mistakes over and over again. The actors were great, there are definitely solid moments, but the plot isn't amazing.

Yeah it's not awful like what Dexter turned into but it's definitely lost it's original spark in the later seasons. It's still fun to watch but it just all sorta blends together after a while. It's harder for them to shock you cause they already set that bar so high.

Also the fill-ins at the beginning are so cheesy.

"Hi my life is shit, I'm throwing up in a toilet. Here's what you missed!"

To be fair, I love the fill-ins. It's unique and lasts less than 5 seconds. Reminds me of the Simpsons couch gags with the different scenarios they come up with.

My wife grew up in a neighborhood with people just like the Gallaghers (some in her own family) and she said it's pretty realistic that they'll keep falling into their own mistakes over and over again. She says it's the cycle of poverty and why those families never improve. You'd think they'd learn after all the crap happens to them but they fall right back into familiar patterns.

It's funny you say that cause I was about to edit my post. I get additional laughter from it because my wife also grew up in similar conditions and the comparisons she pulls from the show to her childhood adds to my enjoyment/shock/whatever.

This was my main problem with Dexter. I felt like they used some of their best material the first few seasons and made it harder to keep interest without jumping the shark.

Like, I was surprised that they went with a rival killer plotline right from the first episode, and then making it a "the killer is my brother" plotline in the same season. Those could have both been entire seasons later on in the show. I felt that by Season 4 they've used up all their good material. I mean, if it weren't for the last 5 minutes of the Season 4 finale, that could have been a great series finale if not for the soft reset.

Yeah, my wife claims Fiona is a carbon copy of her older sister. Her sister can and has done some of the stuff Fiona has done in the show.

It's pretty funny seeing her react and facepalm at some of the stories.

It's even funnier cause we both grew up in poverty. But she grew up in "white poverty" like in Shameless while I grew up in ghetto poverty closer to what you see in Everybody Hates Chris. I never realized how different they were until watching this show.

Difference is, Dexter turned into a bad show. Shameless is still good...just not as good as it once was.

I didn't grow up in poverty or the city so I'm not able to relate to a lot of what happens. I grew up with a lower middle class family that lived in a double wide in the country. I watch Shameless and laugh at how outrageous it all is but half of it my wife goes, "No that's a thing that happens. When I was growing up...." Then I go "Wtf that's a thing people do?!?!"

Shameless has had the oddest spike in popularity. I've been watching since season 1 and it's been on Netflix for a while, but it didn't really get popular until like a year or two ago. Now it's become this water cooler conversation show.

This season was the only one that I didn't care much for, but I think Shameless will stick around for a while. The Showtime curse has finally caught it after 8 seasons and that's better than any other program from that network by far

Seasons 7 and 8 started showing they were running out of ideas imo. I didnt like them. I do think after a certain point you have to have come from a...tougher/rougher background to still be totally into the show and the characters. Just gets harder to empathize with them. Frank especially has a couple plot points that just get out of hand. And yes, I know thats the point of his character - doesnt make it fun to watch.

The first four seasons are great. Season four in particular is amazing, that one will go everywhere you never thought it would go. But it's never quite the same after that. It doesn't get Dexter bad, but I got really tired of it towards the end of season six.

I've basically come to accept that the only acceptable way for the show to end is for Frank to die and have everyone go their own way when they realize he was the only thing actually holding them together.

Also one of my issues with the Show is that it's been running for 8(?) years now but I don't think the same amount of time has passed in the show.

I'm pretty sure Seasons 1 and 2 are only a few months apart as well. Season 1 ends in the winter and Season 2 starts in the summer.

Season 2 takes place over like 4-5 months because it ends just after Thanksgiving.

And yeah Season 3 and 4 are in the same year.

The whole timeline just doesn't make sense at all.

I completely lost interest around the beginning of S3 and never went back. S2 was a slog to get through too.

Dexter was vastly better.

Only seasons 1-4 are better than Shameless.

Yes, she has several nude scenes throughout the show. Lots of attractive women baring it all on the show.

Come for the boobs, stay for the drama.

Enjoy it while you can. This latest season (8) was what I'd consider the worst of the series. Not to say it's bad, it's just nothing really happened.

Yeah, that has been my fear. How do you run a show for 8 seasons without either recycling plots with no character growth or fundamentally changing the structure of the show.
