We've seen plenty of iterations of the franchise where he is the same old hotheaded muscle of the group who has to concede to Leo's leadership. There are lots of stories to be told about what his style of leadership could potentially be. Leo would still conceivably be a potent fighter so he could maybe be in the role as muscle or even a sort of unofficial leader by way of always mitigating the mistakes Raph would make but never getting acknowledgement for it. That would actually be an awesome wrinkle to the story in sort of a prequel way that sets up Leo's leadership. But I still stay open minded about new iterations because almost all of them being some good things to the table, even the new live action movies which I surprisingly enjoyed. That all said, this is legitimately one of the ugliest, shittiest art styles I've ever seen in all of cartoondom. That's actually disputed since one of the creators (can't remember if it was Laird or Eastman) stated that the character was always portrayed as white, but the other one, like you said, says he envisioned her original version as being based on his half black girlfriend. So it's kind of up in the air.
