The game has only improved since second gen. I downloaded the second gen on my 3DS and it's just awful playing with those mechanics in modern day.

I remember when the game was heavily focused on which elemental type your pkmn was...
Fire type beat leaf, leaf type beat water type, water type beat rock type...
and on top of that in the newer pkmn games there's so many Pokmon with "multiple" affinities, allowing some Pokmon to use moves that otherwise GEN1~2 Pokmon would had never used...
Nowadays some Pokmon could easily rekt the Pokmon they're supposedly weak against (not even factoring in the egg/pkmn breeding mechanics and whatnot)...

The amount of backlash from bitter edgelords who enjoyed Gen 1 and 2 but hate it as an adult is disgusting. I feel like most of the sentiment is because a lot of them tie the games to being a kid, and deep down are mad at themselves for growing up and miss that time of their life. So they take it out on Pokemon because they got left behind by the series and really difficult to reconnect with it when there's 600 new creatures for you to figure out. So they just get frustrated and express it as POKMON IS STUPID NOW. THEY SHOULD'VE STOPPED MAKING THEM WHEN I STOPPED PLAYING THEM.

Type coverage has been a thing since day one, Gen II in particular was the glorious era of Fire/Thunder/Ice Punch as TMs so you could slap them on damn near any team, Typhlosion in particular could get Thunder Punch to whack Water types, and Feraligatr Ice Punch to whack Grass types, and Meganium could get Ancient Power through breeding to deal with Fire types.

The only change there is you weren't paying attention.

I'm past the catch 'em all and min-maxing phase, but I still enjoy the series

multitypes have been a thing since gen 1, heck, there were no single type-d ghost, dragon, flying, rock, or ice types in gen 1, or even worse, tornadus is the only single type flying type, period.

Nah. I do agree that it will probably change though. The number of Pokemon is fast becoming prohibitive, unless Game Freak just reuse the 3D models they currently have, at least for the time being.

Their alternative options would be:

- Stop creating new Pokemon and focus on other content / features (with maybe an 'ultimate' game where you can go to multiple regions or something similar).
- Keep creating new Pokemon every gen, but *only* let you catch the new ones (similar to get the Black/White approach). They could treat this as a reset of sorts and let the new Pokemon accumulate again.

It's hard to imagine either to be honest. I think Nintendo might do both: the former as a one-off and the latter for the mainline games.

I think it started with it being from the current episode, then it went to being the one from the next episode, then the previous, then it was replaced by trainer's choice, then it went to the next episode for the beginning 2-3 eps of BW, and now it's the one from the current episode.
