I dont understand. Ive gained a decent amount of lately but have always been fairly into running 5ks. But Im 62 and 255...which is sadly the heaviest Ive ever been. Yet I can run a 5k in about 34-36 minutes(includes some walking in there)

Is it possibible to be fat but still athletic? No right? Its weird. I need to run more and get back to 220. Damn it.

its not athletic to be running a 5k at 255 but its pretty good. Ive seen people that weight successfully complete c25k. If your lungs and legs can handle it then good on you.

I didn't think of that. I guess that's good for a fat guy. IDK, though. I've never been fat.

That doesn't matter. Athletic is a standard that doesn't get a pass because you are fat.

It seems like people who were once athletic but then get fat are still more capable of athletics than people who were always fat. Part of it might be that you know how to push yourself and proper form and stuff, but it seems like there is also some lasting effect of that earlier fitness.

I dunno man... it's possible that I'm living in a bubble but mid 30s seems... pedestrian slow... like you can take anyone off the street and they can make that time. I run 5ks on the regular for boxing and I have to be REALLY slacking off/borderline walking on my run to hit anywhere near the 30 minute mark. I feel like I would literally have to walk half the distance to get 35 mins. We've got about 5 amateur heavyweights at our gym who are 230+ and they can all run 5ks in the 25-28 min range and these guys are far from athletic. Hell, a few of them look flat out obese and can definitely move down a weight class or two.

Yeah but youre seeing bigger guys who are in an athetlic activity.

You gotta think. I doubt half of the people
You see on the streets can even run a 9 minute mile...and definitely not 3 12 minutes miles. People are lazy af and dont exercise lol

I'd agree that most people won't be able to run a sub 10 mile, not because they aren't athletic or physically can't, but because they don't have the mental fortitude nor the motivation to complete the mile. Most people would just give up halfway through once it starts getting harder to breathe rather than persevere. If for whatever reason their lives were on the line, I guarantee it'd be a different story.

I remember in 8th grade PE our final was to run a mile in less than 10. If you couldn't make it your final grade would be lowered one letter grade. We had a lot of fatties in our class that year who did nothing but slack off... but they all ended up finishing within 10 mins. Sure they weren't feeling too well afterwards but they still made it.

My point with this is that completing a slow as balls 5k (no offense, we all gotta start/restart somewhere) regardless of how out of shape you are doesn't demonstrate any physical/athletic ability. What it does demonstrate is your mental fortitude and your willingness to endure pain and suffering for little to no gain, which is pretty impressive in its own right.

TLDR: Don't mistake mental endurance for athletic potential

Why are you implying that 255 is fat? People can be healthy at any size.

Stop saying it and just do it. Start by simply eating a lot less. Weight loss is all about diet and caloric intake.

However, I still commend you for being able to run a 5k in general while being that heavy. You definitely have the mindset to maintain an active lifestyle, just work on your diet otherwise progress will be very slow

that's pretty fucking good for 6'2, 255lbs that's not muscular/fit already

if you're overweight and you can run a sub-10min mile, you're okay

I know I know...thats what Ive always struggled with honestly. I used to be SUPER picky until recently. As in like, I couldnt even eat a salad until like 3 years ago hah. Losing weight is simple and I get that, but I get tempted by food too often :/
