yes because "communism" has never existed yet on earth. they always just adapt the rules to their own tastes and then fall into a dictatorship. now is the time when you call me a no true scotsman. but i don't care. it's true. the only real communism is the earth society in Star Trek. that's what it's supposed to be, and what has never worked before in real life.

I think any full on political policy/ideology leads to fascism.

Communist governments necessarily become authoritarian. There is no other way the system can work.

Authoritarianism in some fashion, maybe. Fascism, no.

communism may not work as a governmental mode but there are important elements of it which are worth incorporating into our current system, and people have benefited immensely from initiatives which are communist in spirit.

Communism in real life is basically a dictatorship. The "ideal" communism is basically as much as a fairy tale as magical money trees.

Every attempt so far at establishing communism has failed short of its goal, and instead resulted in an authoritarian state-capitalist country (the State, not the people, owns everything, and divvies it out according to the ruling elite). And just about every one of them calls themselves socialist or democracies, despite being neither.

So I'm being pedantic here - does communism lead to authoritarian/fascist societies? We'll probably never know, but the attempts at establishing it should be a pretty clear warning: not worth finding out.

Colloquially, yeah, every country that we generally call communist these days has been an oppressive authoritarian mess.

Sure, liberals have always turned to fascism when they saw communism on the rise.

can we get some discussion going around this point or is this something most people will agree on? Jordan Peterson doesn't talk about communism in this way, which is unsurprising since all of his nuance goes out the window when discussing communism

EDIT: i mean, to his credit, he gets close to the point when he explain why the left should exist

The biggest challenge for communism is to find a way to distribute resources and responsibilities without the need for a centralized figure to manage it all. This is, obviously, very difficult. It's even more difficult in the context of a global society that is largely capitalist and has promoted largely capitalist modes of thought.

These things are difficult mainly because communists are trying to force a revolution when the revolution needs to occur organically through the complete consolidation of wealth.
