I do understand what you're getting at, and I sympathize, because if there was screening for ASD, I do agree with you that more would probably choose to abort. So I can see how you might feel about that. But a Down syndrome baby is destined to early Alzheimers. I'm talking 40s and 50s. They often have in-born heart defects that require extensive surgeries. We're talking astronomical medical costs and lifelong complications. Autism, for the most part, doesn't carry with it the life-long medical problems. It's a disability, but rather self-limiting compared to Down's, which has a lot of baggage with it. You're arguing that a sperm and egg on their own are not sufficient to bring about a viable life, ergo it's not morally impermissible to draw the line there. I'm saying a pregnancy before 22-24 weeks is not viable either. Take mother out of the equation, so for example, severe preeclampsia that requires induction of labor or c-section, or mother will die. A 20 week baby will overwhelmingly not survive. Maybe a tiny fraction do, with hundreds of thousands of dollars of medical care spent, and those babies will likely suffer from life-long complications and/or an early death. A few weeks more in gestation and it's a completely different picture. You can manage a baby in the NICU much better at 24 weeks. Most states have bans after age of viability. So around 22-24 weeks, depending on the state. Pushing the buck to 20 serves no logical purpose other than preventing Down syndrome screening from being able to be done in time to abort that fetus. To respond to your earlier point about autism--not the same as Down syndrome. I do understand what you're getting at, and I sympathize, because if there was screening for ASD, I do agree with you that more would probably choose to abort. So I can see how you might feel about that. But a Down syndrome baby is destined to early Alzheimers. I'm talking 40s and 50s. They often have in-born heart defects that require extensive surgeries. We're talking astronomical medical costs and lifelong complications. Autism, for the most part, doesn't carry with it the life-long medical problems.
