Something like 1 petabyte for external hard drive, or hell I'll even settle for 500 TB external hdd (like when 500 GB hdds were considered to be a lot)

With the advent of HD, movies and shows take up so much space that 1 terabyte is basically like, pointless. I don't know where all my data space went, I just have no more room for shows and stuff!

On amazon 1 TB hdd still seems to be the standard.

Step 1, buy NAS.
Step 2, populate with most economical gig per dollar HDD. Probably something in the 4TB range.
Step 3, RAID that shit.

there have been HDDs bigger than 1TB commercially available for quite awhile now.......

Yeah, I haven't been impressed with a 1TB HDD since 2009. My single largest drive is 6TB currently and I've had that for 2 or 3 years.

I have a 4 TB one hooked up to my PS4 and I bought it like... a year ago almost, whenever it was that they added support for that in an update. Don't know why you think 1 TB is the standard.

You'd be surprised how quickly 10 TB fills up. You know how many movies and shows exist nowadays, HDified? 1 Series in 1080p, or hell even 720p, takes like 100-150 gb. That's a tenth of a terabyte gone. For one tv show. Now imagine 20 shows. Then there's the 200 top quality movies in existence for the past couple of decades.

It's just not enough. I might settle for half a petabyte, but why isn't petabyte size commercially available yet?

There's only two types of hard drives. New ones, and full ones. You have ten terrabytes of space, you're going to torrent mad shit and fill it up.

I can't tell if some of the posts saying 6 tb or 4 tb are being facetious, or being completely serious in demonstrating that this is somehow radically larger than 1 tb, rather than just pennies worth. That's nothing. I'm asking for something close to a petabyte's worth of size, no less than half that or (judging by the fact that it hasn't been available commercially yet) at least a quarter of that, but definitely no less than a quarter of a petabyte.

this is something that makes no sense as far as space issues go imo.

there's inherently nothing to showcase in the absolute majority of TV shows out there that warrant such a high quality.

4k movies, however...

I love movies, but... it's a movie. It's one 2-3 hour file with some extras. A TV show consists of a hundred episodes, each at 20 minutes at least. Why wouldn't you also want it in HD or feel it's not warranted?

Imagine the year is 1998 and someone was asking this same question but for gb, or mb. Something that is common nowadays. You realize how idiotic the statement "who tf needs 500 TB" sounds like now? Imagine someone saying that for 500 mb

hence the topic title, what with it being 2018 and all. Technology has advanced so rapidly, with smartphones and shit like that. Can't believe storage space doesn't have the same rapid advancement.
