There is a lot of stuff you never have to craft to progress in the game. Plus, "what" you're making isn't as important as the rarity of what you're making and it's modifiers. IIRC, one of the best items in the game can be crafted almost immediately, but it's pretty much worthless until you make it's top rarity form with the proper modifiers (Insta-kill and a couple others.). Firis is a sequel in the sense that it takes place in the same world, and some of the characters from the first game make appearances.
