@chill02
@Error1355
(I forget who else enjoys them)

Let's talk. What are your favorites, what have you been playing lately, what are you looking forward to?

I've been on a bit of a Dirt 4 kick the last week or so. I'm tempted to get back into F1 or Forza 7, or maybe pick up Project Cars 2 again.

The Crew 2 looks good, but no release date on that yet. There are some, like, off-road racing games coming soon too, plus you can probably expect FH4 this fall.

I've been playing WRC 7 lately. I'm at the WRC division driving a Yaris, just finished Monte Carlo (the endurance stage is pretty brutal, being roughly 14 minutes long). On that note, the real Monte Carlo rally took place two days ago.

You haven't bought either?
Do you play with controller or a wheel? I find PC2 to be frustrating with controller, especially before changing the default settings. Whereas F1 is really smooth with controller.

PC2 is gonna be more like GT in that there's a variety of types of cars and tracks (except, like, a ton more), whereas F1 just has F1 cars and tracks. But I really like career mode in F1, and the depth they added with durability and managing your tires and fuel. And it's less janky in general than PC2.

Pros:
+ Lots of varied stages (13 countries)
+ Endurance stages are generally harder than those from DiRT 4
+ The handling model is somewhere in between DiRT 4's two settings, but it feels right
+ Career mode feels like a proper tournament and not just random events

Cons:
- There's no way to know how well you're doing until you finish a stage (which is realistic, but some checkpoints would be nice)
- Only 3 car classes (Junior WRC, WRC 2, WRC), but that's due to the nature of the license
- Co-driver sounds a bit robotic compared to DiRT's, but gets the job done

IIRC there's 3 days per rally, and I think generally 4 or 5 stages per rally, but one of them is an endurance stage which usually combines all stages for that rally and it's sometimes in the opposite direction (I know Monaco's is like that)

I've been playing Dirt Rally for the last month or so.
I like it a lot. Previously I had Dirt 3, but Rally I feel is better.

I would have bought F1 2017, but they still want real money for it. So, I stick with '14. As it's the season I was able to watch the most.

Oh, I do find them fun because most of them change terrain types (which doesn't happen in DiRT 4), have some pretty crazy turns, and feel accurate enough. There's also head to head events in some rallies.

Dirt 4 is a more complete game, I would say of the two. The career has significantly more depth, and they added playable tutorials and a greater variety of gameplay. It has a simplified handling model in addition to the simulation settings (which a lot of people feel are still simplified in comparison to Rally).

What Rally offers is a more hardcore experience, with real-world stages and challenging AI. Also it has Finland and Monte Carlo, which I like as settings.

im not really a racing game player but so far it feels like FH3 fixes the main problems ive had with racing games in the past, namely the reliance on having to get 1st place in races, getting gravely punished for making a single mistake, lack of variety, etc.

FH3 honestly feels more like a driving game than a racing game, it's so much fun to just chill out with and play with the different cars, play at your own speed, customize everything, etc

The oldest racer I've played was an '87 NES game called Rad Racer. It was basically just Outrun, but it didn't matter because first of all I never played Outrun and second it was a lot of fun. You dodge the cars and tey to make it to the end in the time limit. Interestingly, it was actually a Square game, in the days before Final Fantasy. Rad Racer II wad pretty much more of the same, but with a burnout move that was kinda cool. But it's a good thing because like I said, fun.

Fatal Run, on the 2600, released in '89 somehow, and was legit as hell. Dame badic concept as Rad and Outrun--race against time, dodge cars, but with one key difference: you had a machine gun you could shoot at the other cars! It also takes place in a post-apocalyptic world and you're delivering the cure to some plague. And when you win, a rocket launches for some reason.

Top Gear and Top Gear 2, SNES, were the first actual quality racing games I ever played, and frankly, they still stack up against the greats today. Kind of a hybrid of Outrun-style gameplay and actual racing, plus multiplayer, they didn't have super accurste physics but had great white-knuckle gameplay that really can't be beaten and a pair of killer soundtracks. There was a third on SNES but I never played it. Top Gear 3000.

Stunt Race FX was legit too. I used to rent it as a kid, and when I found a copy a few years ago on my birthday at a local shop, I bought it to relive the fun days. (Best birthday present I ever got myself.) Now the framerate was terrible, but considering the entire game is rendered via Super FX, it's still impressive. I always liked the monster truck, even though the F1 car is the obvious choice. I did everything there was to do in this game, which isn't a whole lot, but I mention if because some of the stunt tracks were tough.

I liked Super Mario Kart ok but it wasn't really my thing. I dunno why really. There was nothing wrong with it. It just wasn't for me, I guess.

F-Zero was my pick for SNES mode 7 racers instead. I liked that it was more fair due to no power-ups (though I didn't hate the power-ups in SMK) and that the game felt a lot more technical. You had to really try if you were gonna make some of those turns. Especially on Fire Field. But it did frustrate me some thanks to its difficulty, especially on the later cups.

Crash Team Racing definitely was, though. That game ruled so hard. I even beat most of the staff ghosts. I beat all of the N Tropy ones, and all but 4 of Oxide ones. Great powerups, great audio, great tracks, what's not to love? It even extended gameplay with additional challenges in addition to the races... and they were actually fun!

Mega Man Battle & Chase was not as good. The main appeal was definitely that it was Mega Man. Once you got used to it, I mean, it works. It just wasn't fun. The mrchanics were a little too far removed from reality, the framerate was a little too slow, the camera was a little too stiff, everything was a little too something. But I dunno, I guess it was neat.

Muppet Racemania was actually better than you'd expect, but that's not saying a whole lot. :P I had fun with it, though pretty much only the actual racing mode was any good. They had a couple of slow... platforming... modes too, which I did but didn't really enjoy. I just wanted to unlock stuff.

Crash Nitro Kart was a disappointment after CTR. I mean, it was fine. It just couldn't stack up against CTR. The biggest disappointment was how easy it was to unlock everything after spending forever mastering the first game.

Gran Turismo 4. Realistic racers have never really been my thing, but I liked GT4 ok. I think I got somewhere around 25% done, which still took dozens of hours. I should pop it back in one day. I remember ragequitting after spending a million bucks on that one French rally car and upgrades and still losing, lol. On the other hand, a $150k Ford GT will get you through way more than it should with a few more grand of upgrades, lol.

Top Gear Dare Devil is one of the worst games I've ever played. It was mind-numbingly easy, could be 100%'d in a day, had awful physics... how could the best rscing series on the SNES screw up so hard on the PS2?

F-Zero GX. Wow, what a great game. It's known for being hard as hell, and sure, it is. But it's also fun as hell, technical as hell and even when it's unfair as hell, it still feels ok to lose somehow. I unlocked almost everything in this one too. Just have to still clear missions 1, 7 and 9 on Very Hard.

F-Zero GP Legend was also great, you know, for a GBA racing game. I even managed 1st place on every time trial and all the Zero Tests. It plays more of less like SNES F-Zero, with all the strengths, just with more cars and tracks, and a stoey mode.

F-Zero Maximum Velocity was basically F-Zero 2. It's good if you've played all the others and still want some more. But if not, there are better F-Zeros out there.

Mario Kart DS was pretty legit. I don't really know what made it better to me than Super but I had fun with it. Poltergust 3000 best kart.

Mario Kart Double Dash had the problem of having powerups be way too overpowered. I was not a fan, for that reason.

Wipeout HD. So, I don't really know how to rate this one overall. It was mostly fun, but it got super ultra BS-y in some of the last races with enemies shooting thirty missiles at you at once right at the finish line. Enough that I really kinda feel bitter at the game as a whole even though it was really only like one in twenty events that had that problem.

Sonic & All-Star Racing Transformed is actually my very favorite racing game, and not because of the Skies of Arcadia track where everything explodes and you get to fly alongside an HD Delphinus... Ok, that's exactly why. >_> But it's a great game for other reasons too. Even though at times it was like... who the hell is Ulala and did they seriously use TWO Super Mokey Ball monkies... it had great balance, fun stages, and most importantly, changes to the course itself from lap to lap.

And I think that's ever racing game I've ever played at length.
