Don't.

The Hobbit is a good book. The LotR trilogy is bad. All of the movies are bad. Read The Hobbit again and just stop there.

I agree with him tbh.

But full disclosure, I'm not huge on the fantasy genre to begin with.

He's kind of right book wise. The movies are the opposite.

The movies missed a great opportunity to cast Tom Baker as Tom Bombadil.

In fairness, I never actually saw The Hobbit movies because after sitting through LotR I had already decided they would be awful. I can admit that. I didn't want a string of money-grab flicks to diminish The Hobbit as I had it in my own head.

So I've heard. I feel a little bad because I do truly enjoy Martin Freeman as an actor, but I couldn't allow Peter Jackson to rob me of something I hold so dear. The LotR trilogy and most of Tolkien (while very important in the culture) is very mediocre and underwhelming for me personally. The Hobbit is a favorite. I read at least (occasionally more than) once a year. While I loved Peter Jackson's early work, his adaptations of the LotR saga does fuck all for me. Which is fine because even though I enjoyed the books when I was a kid, I tried to reread them as a teenager right as the movies came out and found them lacking. I have still never even seen RotK.

if it matter, I loved the Hobbit book, but hated the movies and turned it off sometime during the second one.

I loved the lotr movies but always found the books difficult to read or I get distracted by another media and forget about reading it

It's been a long time (whenever the movies came out) since I read the LotR books, but I feel like at the time I thought Fellowship was actually done better as a movie than as a book.

The others I can't recall well enough to comment on and like I said, I never even saw the RotK adaptation.

But those books are bad. They are not good. Anyone who says otherwise is blinded by nostalgia or stupid or a liar.

Did you ever see the Rankin and Bass animated version of The Hobbit?

A couple times as a kid. I enjoyed it well enough. It reminded me of the animated version of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. No idea if they're related, but I associate them with each other.

I haven't seen either as an adult though and I didn't own them and watch them more than the couple of times I caught them on cable as a youngster.
