How or why do people get started with inverted controls? It's literally never been the default in any game (except for flight simulators maybe).

Not trying to judge, just curious. My roommate is like this too and I don't get it.

For me I think it started last gen on a game where the default was inverted. I forced myself to get use to it and I only played with inverted controls after.

Prior to that I played with normal controls. I think it was gears of war 1.

More games need to do it the way Halo did it, tbh. During the tutorial at the start of the game, as you're waking up they tell you that they need to calibrate your armor suit and to look at the lights on the left and right. Then they tell you to look at the light on the top. Regardless of how you move the stick it always looks up (and then changes the settings accordingly). It's so intuitive that most people literally never even think about it. They just do what feels natural, either pulling back or pushing up on the stick, and the game automatically allocates that to be "up" for them. It's brilliant.

Holy hell that is genius.

It also has a catch for if you are a smart ass (like me) who presses the same direction both times. It makes you try out both methods then manually pick one.

Inverted y axis should be called normal and should definitely be the default setting. "Normal" as it's commonly used only makes sense when moving a cursor up on a 2D plane, not adjusting a 3D line of perspective. Inverted is intuitive for 3D games as it mimics the actual motion of anything that looks up and down. I question the intelligence of anybody who thinks "normal" makes more sense than "inverted".

For a first person game, the joystick isn't "sticking out" of you, the joystick IS you. Set a controller down on a table and look at the joystick. That's your head.

Moving forward on a stick to look UP makes no sense as the act of looking is not something moving straight back and forth on a line.

It's tilting something in 3 dimensional space.

Inverted controls probably started in flight simulation games, where pulling the broomstick towards you (i.e down) makes the plane go up, and upwards to fly down.

It's really as simple as this. I look up, I move the stick up. At my job, all the machinery I use, up is up. I don't have to picture the boom having a strange stick coming out of it to justify making down up. I'm not gonna add a strange stick to a character's head to justify that either.
