It's competently-written and well-acted, but it has horrible messages
It begins with Jefferson getting pulled over by the police, at which point he and his daughters do absolutely everything possible to make the police suspicious. They start screaming, moving erratically, he doesn't roll the window down (and even when he does, not all the way), and then gets argumentative with the police. Turns out, they suspected he was involved in a robbery because he met the description of a black man who robbed a liquor store. He then yells if the thief was wearing a suit, as if that's something you could notice when someone drives past you. The outrage of being pulled over and let go is enough to warrant him to almost zap the officer who was doing his job. Later, Jefferson goes to save his daughter from a club of gang members, and after beating them up (among heavy gunfire), he gets accosted by the police as he leaves the building. The police hold tasers up to him, and ask him to get on the ground, which he doesn't. The 4th or 5th time they have to ask him, they use the term "black ass" (evidently the showrunners weren't ballsy enough to use the n word), which invokes a violent rage in Jefferson. For the crime of doing their jobs and pointing out that his ass is black, he electrocutes them more violently than he did the gun-toting thugs who kidnapped his daughter and shot at him. Those are the most egregious scenes in the first episode, but there's still shit like his BLM daughter giving him grief for relying on the proper authorities to deal with violent criminals. Definitely not buying the rest of the season unless I hear really good things. --- Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear. -George Orwell ... Copied to Clipboard!

It felt like a mature superhero show. Definitely this. The show really touched in on reality but still brings on hopes of a superhero figure. It's only a matter of time I wonder is when it will drown out to become all superhero and just keeping up for the sake of it, which is what Arrow is unfortunately doing right now in its 6th season. --- My sig is here. i haven't seen the show (nor do i plan to, don't really watch superhero stuff) so i can't say if you're right or wrong. maybe your describing it harsher than it is, maybe the police were being bad/corrupt but your love of authority didn't see that i dunno Black Lightning is a principal at an inner city school where a gang called the hundred basically runs amok so he tries to keep the school a safe place for kids while shit is like the wild west outside of it. Cops don't do anything and basically harass him for being black which makes him come out of retirement to do what they can't. As for him shocking the cops it literally just stunned them while he threw a gang member into a car after making him talk by electrocution It was actually a lot better than I thought it would be. Mal_Fet posted...Darmik posted...Superheroes fight off cops trying to arrest them pretty often. Batman Begins, I agree. All the police in those cars are either dead or disabled. The Dark Knight, hundreds of lives were at stake if Bats didn't get to Joker. Fighting to get past them is fine. Spiderman, they were actually holding guns up to him, which can kill him. Tasers can't hurt BL; he could have ran away super fast and they couldn't have stopped him even if they hit. He just zapped them because he thought it was an injustice for the police to apprehend all suspects when shots have been fired in a crime-filled area.
