Wouldnt Medusas punishment for being raped actually be a gift since she had a way of defending herself now?

She was already demigod tier in power beforehand. It wasn't a random dude who raped her. It was literally Poseidon.

You kidding? She was considered beautiful, but now she became ugly and her treasured hair became snakes lol. There's no way for her to interact with anybody either cuz they'd all turn to stone. I think like her actual personality doesn't really come to play in a lot of these stories, just that she's something to be beaten

prior to the rape she had a reputation for being "flirty" that's it.

why/how Tyr has 10 mothers.

For some reason, I thought that was Heimdall, and that it was 9 mothers.

Anyway, an interesting theory I heard was that Tyr was originally the principle god of the Aesir, but when Odin became more popular they created myths of him 'stepping down' and being replaced by Odin. Of course, later version have Odin as the original head, such as in the Volsung Saga or in Poetic Eddas.

ChromaticAngel posted...
Originally Tyr was assigned to Tame Fenrir but Fenrir started to grow so big Odin got worried that even Tyr would not be able to keep him Tame so they tried to chain him up but Fenrir broke the chains every time. So they came up with magic chains and challenged Fenrir to break out of them. He refused because he knew he wouldn't be able to do it, and Odin bargained saying they'd remove the chains if he couldn't. Fenrir didn't believe them and demanded someone's arm be placed in his jaws as collateral and Tyr volunteered and that's how he lost his arm.

The thing a bunch of people also don't know about is that Fenrir swears revenge on Odin at this point, not because he's chained up, but because he ruined the friendship with Tyr and Fenrir. Tyr actually still visits him while he's chained up to feed him and personally feels horrible about what happened to Fenrir.

Yeah, that's one of my favorite stories, actually. I'm very familiar with it. I was merely saying I don't remember a particular part where a cave was his resting place. The chains were called Gleipnir and were forged by Dwarves, IIRC.

I said they were "like" minor nobility, it's not really a 1-1 comparison. The Aesir were regarded as more important than the Vanir. Loki was the son of a Giant and Vanir, however, because the Aesir and Vanir hated the Giants, Loki actually takes on the last name of his Vanir mother and lives as a Vanir (extremely uncommon for the vikings to have your mother's last name). Thor's father was Aesir, so he gets to be an Aesir.

Yes, I get that, but saying minor is innaccurate in my opininion. The Vanir are largely nature deities and therefore are extremely important. Sailors feared and revered Njord, god of the sea. Frigg is the goddess of love and marriage and thus is incredibly important (and also the root word for the semi-explitive 'frig'). To call them minor is sort of like calling the Titans 'minor gods'. It's more accurate to say they are a seperate race of nature deities, whereas the Aesir are more about human concepts like magic and war. IIRC, there is also some stories that specifically state that the Aesir and Vanir began as enemies who fought until peace was achieved and their houses were united, which paints them more as equals than subservient.

She may have been given a power, but she was given a power in such a way that she had to be ostracized from everyone else and then she became the stuff of legends so that men went out of their way to try to kill her just because.

It's fucked up with the rape angle being a part of the equation.

Its a late version of the myth aka one of the dumbest ones. All the later myth versions were shit and appealed to edgelords because Greek Mythology wasn't as cool and was dying so they tried to mix it up and add stuff go read up on how the Romans started changing greek god origins to appeal to the Roman masses.

And also Hades was the least asshole out of all the gods. Like, he's typically depicted as the go to villain but he's literally the nicest god in the bunch. Nice in so far as one can be nice while raping persephone but when you look at the shit other gods have done Hades is a paragon of virtue by comparison.

this is why it annoyed me so much when they made disney's hercules. that was such an ignorant movie

Literally everyone makes hades the villain in western media, there are a lot more problems with disney's hercules than the changing of mythology. If anything it's like the least annoying thing of the severely flawed movie.

Anyway how does this revelation change how one views the story of Medusa? It was still a bullshit thing to do to her even if the sex was consensual. It's just even more unjust now, but it definitely was unjust before.

Everyone makes Hades the villain because they incorrectly assume he's an analogue to Satan (lives underground, rules over the dead, fire imagery) so it's easier for audiences unfamiliar with Classical Mythology to see him as the bad guy.

Disney's Hercules was just the typical Disneyfication of an old story to make it more "fairy tale"-like

So Romans were the original edgelords? Neat.

Yeah it's mostly because of the christian influences, associating underworld with the place of hell so the ruler must be analogous to the devil himself. At any rate it's not just disney, even the dcau had hades be an evil devil demon thing. And the movie version of percy jackson for some reason shits all over the books and changes the story to make hades the villain as well.
