80/80

It's unlikely most children of today will look back past the Wii for gaming purposes. This means they'll miss out on tons of fantastic games from the sixth generation and before. What games are you most upset that the next generation will miss, and what games are you most happy that they'll grow up with?

Not only that, they probably cannot comprehend what games looked like back in the 80s/90s and would be too much for the majority to handle such dated graphics...

And do you think us old fogies are playing those games or the younger generation?

I expect it mostly leans towards 90s and 80s kids...

That said I don't have proof one way or the other, so i may be off base...

I wouldn't go that far. Pixel graphics are still common among indie games. The hardest part for many kids would probably be dated mechanics and bad translations.

You and Burgess both raised good points so i will agree that this is more likely then my kneejerk reaction was...

3D didn't really hit its stride until the 7th gen.

The 5th and 6th gens were about discovering a new formula and living in the now. Naturally, it ages like crap.

Idk
A lot of young adults still try out ancient era games once they get older. Theres a pretty decent stream of "playing ____ for the first time" topics about them just on CE.

With that said, some eras hold up better than others. Idk if I could go back to ps1 3d graphics even though I played through them on release. Meanwhile snes/genesis graphics are fine.

I mean everything I was gonna say was basically already covered but to sum up:

- They'll have their own classics. While the gaming industry kind of sucks overall, games are still a hell of a lot more amazing these days than they were like 20 years ago and it's only going to get better from there. I don't pity the future I envy it

- Classic games are getting re-released and remastered and remade so much it's not very difficult to still be exposed to them anyway

- The indie gaming scene pretty much cements their longevity and ease of accessibility for newer generations, so, good on you, indie scene

Really the only games that suffer are the ones in the awkward 3D phase of PS1/N64.

Although some maybe more than others. Going back to play something like Legend of Dragoon from PS1 today isn't as jarring as King's Field, for someone unfamiliar with both, because the former is a turn-based JRPG (with hilarious localization at points), whereas King's Field is a first person action adventure RPG. Made back before PS controllers had joysticks. ...Think about that.

Honestly the biggest thing that will effect whether or not kids play classic games is the popularity of PC gaming.

If PC gaming is huge in 20 years time then pretty much every game ever (within reason) will be avaiable to play.

If in 20 years time we still have the Playstation Ultra X-O and The Nintendo Podbucket. Then they're going to be heavily promoting the new games and "rereleases"

In 2018 we already have;
- Devil May Cry Trilogy
- Shadow of the Colossus remake
- Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection
- Several Mega Man collections/re-releases

They also announced a MediEvil remake last month. On top of this we have OG Xbox re-releases on the way.

These games are usually announced not long before release. So a lot more will be coming.
