It isn't the fact that they are eaten...it's mostly wasted on such a small resource that the hunters are after.

most are endangered This. The waters they are hunted in, they are protected by law due to the low numbers of the species. The Japanese, among others, found a bit of a loophole that if the hunting is for "scientific research" they are permitted to kill a very low number per year. Then they turn around and sell it as food for profit, and when hunting out of view, don't report their numbers resulting in them killing a lot more than permitted for the "research" they aren't even doing. --- Ten million dollars on a losing campaign Twenty million starving and writhing in pain ...
