No way I'm watching it, but I'd like to know the basics before Fighterz hits. I know there's the super cool purple guy with the crazy stained glass shit going on, and the super lame pink bug-eyed guy who looks like the worst DB villain in history.

Zamasu/Goku Black has been the only actual new villain in Super. I'll let MWC explain him because it gets far too complicated to remember it all with time travel shenanigans.

Jiren isn't a villain at all although the angels themselves might be

I assume the super cool purple guy you're talking about is Hit who also isn't a villain, but he's the strongest character in Universe 6 and also an assassin by profession

For me at least the first exposure to Jiren was the current opening (which has surpassed all other Dragon Ball openings as the best one) and him and Goku are going at it the whole time there so you have this thought in the back of your mind he's going to be a cool character so even when faced with how Jiren really is I just think of the opening and go back to thinking "oh yeah, he's alright!"

Anyway, for FighterZ sake all you need worry about are Hit and Goku Black.

SPOILERS FOR DRAGONBALL SUPER TO FOLLOW

Hit is the strongest warrior from Universe 6, which itself is a mirror of Universe 7 where our heroes reside. During a tournament between the two Universes, we are introduced to Hit who is an assassin with great strength and an incredible ability called Time Skip. I haven't read the manga where it's probably explained less wonky, but basically he's able to move through time. In his fight against Vegeta, even as a SS Blue, Vegeta gets his ass whooped. Goku comes in and is able to match Hit by using Kaioken while SS Blue, but the fight is still very even. Hit and Goku develop a mutual respect for one another over the course of the fight.

More with Hit happens in the current Universe Survival arc, but you don't really need to worry about anything else.

As far as Goku Black goes, he is actually a Supreme Kai apprentice named Zamasu who became corrupt during his training. His views of justice became jaded and warped, and desiring to see "mortals" wiped out because they are an affront to the divine, he killed his master Gowasu and sought out the Super Dragon Balls. Prior to killing Gowasu, Zamasu had sparred with Goku and was defeated easily, making him realize he needed the Super Dragon Balls to help bridge this gap in strength, but instead of bridging the gap, he used the Super Dragon Balls to swap bodies with Goku. Now having access to Goku's body and strength, he ruthlessly dispatched Goku (now in his old Zamasu body) and his entire family before going on his mission to eliminate all mortals.

The reason you'll see him sometimes teaming up with another version of Zamasu is because he used the Time Ring (not going to explain all the timey wimey BS about this, MWC would probably be your man here if you're really interested), to get himself to Future Trunks' part of the multiverse where a second Zamasu had used the Super Dragon Balls to make himself IMMORTAL. Together, he and the other Zamasu enact the Mortal Eradication Plan and it's honestly one of the best arcs to ever grace Dragon Ball so you're doing yourself a disservice by not watching it.

I think that should do you for FighterZ though.

Thanks for the explanation, though you mentioning time travel twice and revealing that there were apparently two separate tournament arcs in a row are just the tip of the iceberg for why I won't watch Super.

Main reason of course is that I have zero tolerance for shit tier Toei budgets. Even if they put out 3 or 4 good looking episodes a year, the rest isn't worth it. Quit One Piece for the same reason! Plenty of other shounen that actually have good budgets.

ExTha I would recommend reading the manga version of the Goku Black arc as a lot more is explained regarding what's gone on in Trunks timeline since we last saw him (they show what happens when Babadi comes to earth for example) and also is more respectful to power level scaling when it comes to the fight with Zamasu/Goku Black.

They aren't in a row, and one of them is time travel in the Future Trunks sense, the other is like, skipping a few seconds so that your punches land at an unfair speed.

The budget thing I understand but if you're a fan of Dragonball even a little you still should give it a go.

The One Piece manga I'm just behind on, but I really wasn't enjoying Dressrosa even as we started getting into the final part (I was barely reading chapters at all at that point, basically skimming), so I decided I needed a break. The anime is totally worthless, covering one chapter and episode and looking like shit, so that was a hard drop. The anime had been going downhill after Enies Lobby for a while.

But yeah, I ENJOY Dragonball, but probably not enough to force myself through Super's look. My tolerance for subpar animation in action shows has gotten super low. Blame Hunter x Hunter for being over 130 episodes and always looling good, at least when it mattered. Gon vs Hisoka is basically a fist fight and look several times better than the "amazing" rolling kamehameha scene.

I realize it's not fair comparing Toei to Madhouse, but I've got no reason to give them a pass just because there are lower expectations.

Rolling Kamehameha was pretty nothing, but I guess DB just doesn't mean that much to me so the hype was not there. Honestly I think the girl looked awesome so I wish she'd beaten Goku. DB is still pretty shit with women.

Also Dragonball can't ACTUALLY be cool without Faulconer.

As I posted in another topic, Viz currently has all the chapters that arent collected in a volume available to read on their website, so if you can get ahold of the first two volumes you can get caught up pretty easily on the manga. Chapter 32 just went up even.
