You worked hard to get to where you are and have been making 6 figures for several years.... But still live in a shack, drive a crap 80s toyota, and still wear peasant clothing.

Are they in debt or something? I don't get it. Where's the big ass mansions, ferraris, and pornstars?

Its because of their work ethic. They made sacrifices and are used to those sacrifices

Not everyone who makes six figures wants to shit it all away on overpriced things. If you have a good used car, why replace it? If you have good comfortable clothes, why buy expensive name brand shit? Why buy a McMansion?

If the goal is to build real wealth, you don't rush into spending away your income. You invest it.

Okay so you build wealth until retirement and now you're a billionaire at 65 years old.

Now what? You're going to be thinking you wished you spent most of your money on nice things and coudlve enjoyed life during your younger years.... But now you're old and frail as shit with $1B in your bank account.

I can't wait to make more money because I too have no plans of upgrading my car or housing situation. So that just means more money in the bank and more flexibility to always afford the things I do care about. Even if I became a multimillionaire tomorrow, I'd probably stay very unassuming.

That being said, I don't get people that aggressively save and don't plan on retiring very early. Woohoo you have all this money to spend and you're old as shit.

Why spend just to show off your wealth? Buy what you really want and then save/invest the rest. Sure everyone wants a sports car but even the people who can afford it don't really want it.

That's why you have to have a balance. You need to save but you also need to spend some on awesome experiences rather than just more stuff. It's the experiences that make you rich in perspective and intellect. More stuff isn't always key.

Example: I recently bought a Galaxy Note 8. It was around $1000 for the phone and it was supposed to replace my LG Stylo 2 that I got for $180 a year and a few months ago. I decided to return the phone because the battery life was not that great and the phone was not worth $1000. Even $500 would've been too much imo. So instead, I'm sticking with the old phone for another year or so and I'll just buy another $180-$250 phone then.

The rest gets invested. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. In fact, the LG Stylo 2 even took some really nice pictures of my trip to France this holiday season. I was originally looking for the Note 8 because the camera was supposedly amazing.

So instead of spending $1000 on a new phone, I can continue to enjoy the phone I bought last year for $180 and spend that $1000 on more cool experiences like France. Or I can invest it and the money can pay for another cool experience and then some.

Life isn't about saving every penny, but it's also not about spending every penny. You need to have long term goals and you need to balance everything so that you are saving and investing in not just your bank account but also your life experiences. Otherwise life sucks.

some people just live living frugally.

Like, I remember reading that the IKEA founder has like a net worth of I dunno...20 billion I think it was, yet he still lives like your average middle class person

It's only a couple hours by high-speed train. I wanted to take a few days to go to London but there's a ton to see in France lol. I was there two and a half weeks and still didn't see everything. Might go a second time in the summer.

London is on my radar too. And Japan and Thailand :D

I have known some people that make a lot of money and think sometimes they dress down to kind of play the "I have so much money I can wear whatever I want and it doesn't matter" thing. Its also comfort too, suits and high end clothes aren't comfortable. Sometimes its nice to be comfortable and fly under the radar.

Its like if you see two people at a Ferrari dealership looking for a car and one is wearing a basic suit and the other is wearing clean shorts, new sneakers and a blank t-shirt the guy in the t-shirt probably has more money.

Also, the idea that if you make a lot of money you should spend it all is what keeps you broke TC.

Nothing you can't enjoy at 65 that you can enjoy in younger years. Especially that's expensive. Also the $1B now sets you and your family for life and for generations to come. So you've succeeded.

Some people are just frugal and maybe that is part of what makes them successful. Others are just eccentric or making a bit of an eccentric statement.

If you earn $150k a year but you drive a modern budget car, that's frugal. If you're Jeff Bezos and you're the richest person in the world but you drive an 80s toyota and use a woodchip door as an office desk...you're just a bit of a dick.
