In the snow world. The writing is great and the game play is exactly what I wanted it to be. The only issue I have is that I miss Banjo and Kazooie. Especially Kazooie, her mean spiritedness is the one thing missing from Yooka and Laylee's character.

It's good but definitely relies to heavily on Rare nostalgia. Would've been more memorable had Mario Odyssey not come out and completely pile drived it in originality.

It's a very middle of the road game. Nowhere near as special as it ought to have been considering who was behind it, but nowhere near deserving of all the shit it got. People probably wouldn't have really cared if it Jontron didn't get removed because it came out around the time he was embarrassing himself.

For me, it comes down to the engine. Yooka Laylee feels like a BK game grafted onto a different engine that wasn't specifically designed for it (and that's exactly what it is). The movement, control, mechanics, etc don't feel as cohesive as BK. The final boss battle feels especially wonky... almost like a user-created Little Big Planet level where a different genre of game is being forced to run on a common engine that doesn't feel right.

Don't get me wrong, though-- I enjoyed Yooka Laylee. It's not as good as BK but it's not terribly far off the mark either.

Everyone was expecting BK3. They wanted to be sent right back to their childhood, as if hardly any time had passed since the second one. Even if it were perfect, YL could never be as good as people were hoping. Same thing woulda happened with Half-Life 3. Same thing will happen with the new Tool album - a degree of disappointment is inevitable even if it's otherwise perfect.
