it's an action rpg, if I remember right. I haven't played it in years. I know it isn't turn based and does not play like Final Fantasy.

Tbh I probably wouldn't go back to the first game for its gameplay nowadays. I still like the story for what it was, in that it did its job of giving context to gameplay without being a convoluted mess, but the gameplay hasn't aged as well as KH2 for example.
