A coroner is urging teenagers to look after their friends, after a 16-year-old died at a party and no-one called 911.

Dr Robert Hunter said that in the 17 years he has been a coroner he has never come across a situation like that involving the death of Jake Wheatcroft. The teenager had been celebrating New Years Eve at a friends house when he fell asleep on the sofa after drinking a whole 70cl (1.23183 pints) bottle of vodka.

His friends whipped him with a tea towel, took pictures of his unconscious body and drew on his face as a joke before they realised the seriousness of the situation, Derby and Derbyshire Coroners Court heard.

They later became concerned as they could not wake him, however instead of calling 911, they put him in the recovery position on the floor of the living room and went to bed. However the next day, friends found his body in the same spot at around 11am and they later gave different versions of what had happened.

Giving a narrative verdict, Coroner Dr Robert Hunter said: I find it quite bizarre that not one individual in that house used their initiative to phone the police when they found a dead body on their floor. In the 17 years that I have been a coroner I have never come across a situation like that.

He added: Although I can appreciate why they [his friends] concocted a story, I dont think they realise the consequences of their actions. The impact on his friends will be with them for a long time. It will be with the family for even longer. Clearly we are never going to stop teenagers from drinking. But I want to make one message clear: please if your friend falls unconscious from drinking or any other reason, call 911. You wont be in trouble but you might just save a life.

Pathologist Michael Biggs said Jake died of acute ethanol toxicity which effectively caused the part of the brain which controls breathing to go to sleep. His blood alcohol level was measured at 316ml per 100ml of blood almost four times over the legal drink drive limit.

His family described him as a wonderful, polite, super boy who everybody loved. The inquest heard a number of conflicting accounts of what happened from his three friends at the small party.

Two boys said Jake had been drinking from the bottle of vodka on his own all night but fingerprint analysis revealed the teen had not touched the bottle. His body was originally discovered by one of the boys. He told the court that he attempted to wake Jake up by shaking him but he could not be roused.

He told another boy that he could not wake Jake up and then went to his bedroom and played on his Xbox. He later changed his account to say he had checked his pulse and breathing.

The other boy said he found Jake with stiff arms and knew immediately that he was dead and informed his dad. The boys dad did not call 999 but went to Jakes parents house in Glebe Avenue, in Pinxton, Derbyshire, to inform them of his death.

underage drinking laws

I'm still not gathering what you mean by fair next though.

16 year olds shouldn't be drinking alcohol in the first place, that's why there are underage drinking laws set in place. Even in England, the law is 18. 16 isn't older than 18, so he broke the law and paid for it.

Yeah, I don't understand what that was meant to mean. It's not like these kids were all "does he need medical attention? That means calling 911/999, which we won't do because 'fuck da police' lol."

It's because if they call the police, they could get in trouble for underage drinking. It's part of the price we pay to have those laws.

A friend of mine drank too much a few weeks ago and had to go to the hospital. When they called the paramedics, they just showed up with the ambulance. No cops that I know of. Granted he wasn't underage, but it was a big house party. Cops could have shown up just to make sure no one was underage, but that didn't happen. *shrugs* maybe sometimes it's different.

I'm sure the tone changed when they woke up sober with a dead body in their living room.

The been illegal to drink at 16 doesnt make sense, since they werent on a licensed premises.

In the U.K. its legal for anyone 5 or older to drink alcohol at home (yes you read that right). Infact its legal for a 16 or 17 year old to drink in licensed premises if its bought with a meal.

Its more likely they were drunk on the night, and in the morning simply all panicked and didnt know what to do.

Do kids that age even know what alcohol poisoning looks like? All they know are scenes from party movies where a kid gets wasted and wakes up with dicks drawn all over his face. When you are a teenager just getting introduced to alcohol, you have no idea what the actual risks and warning signs are unfortunately, there are a couple nights in my past when I was that age that I look back on and think "I was so lucky this didn't turn out worse than it did, so stupid"
