Benzedrex and Theraflu - not pills, but effective.

Or when I can be bothered going out when the pharmacy counter is open, actual Sudafed and some Tylenol Cold/Flu (with DXM and guaifenesin).

so I take it Theraflu is the best option?

this is so stupid tbh, I rarely get sick. Even if I do, I do not need medicine. That's why I am not experienced with medicine in the U.S. Back home, I could just take an influenza pill and be done with it.

It's the exact same thing as DayQuil.

Alright....so here's the thing. All these "brand name" cold medicines are just combinations of things you can buy over the counter individually, just in one pill.

Acetaminophen for pain/fever
Dextromethorphan for cough
Guafenisen to loosen mucus to cough it out
Phenylephrine for congestion

The night time versions just have Benadryl to help you fall asleep.

They mask the symptoms for a few hours. You need to take it as often as directed on the box to keep feeling relief. They don't shorten the illness. Colds go away on their own regardless, but they're just meant to not feel as crummy. It won't be 100% relief.

Most over the counter cold preparations are these same medications regardless if you call it DayQuil, Theraflu, or some generic "cold and flu" medicine.

They make another one that includes vitamin C for some reason but don't get those. Vitamin C binds to the zinc and makes it less effective somehow. Most of the ones you'll find in pharmacies are like that. It's just a marketing gimmick since people are uninformed. Zinc acetate is best but zinc gluconate is ok too, just not as good. Get them in lozenge form only since it's only topically effective, zinc supplements do nothing.

What I do is... purple drank (dextromethorphan and guaifenesin)

so this covers the cough side...

Then Harlequin strain for daytime with high CBD to cover all the rest, pain and antihistamine (ACDC if you want basically 0% THC)

For night, CBD Shark and Pennywise for no munchies night.
Sweet and Sour Widow, or a high CBD Grandaddy Purple for have a snack time.

Best all the time CBD meds... CBD lilly, Harlequin, and CBD Mango Haze (lilly is harder to find, mango at times too)

Decolgen is paracetamol, which is just the non-US name for acetaminophen. The Dayquil you took is the same exact thing, plus some extra drugs.

Ehhh, when you say things like "proven to shorten the duration of colds" I know you haven't poured through the data yourself and are basing this off some popular science article you read or that someone told you this.

Searching PubMed for systematic reviews on the topic, a lot of the recent Cochrane reviews are from a single 1st author, Hemil H. Searching him on goggle, he's some Finnish MD/PhD with kind of a silly website showing that the ideas of Vitamin C or Zinc for various ailments has been his life's work.

Not saying he is necessarily wrong, but far too often people get a little invested in their "academic brain child." That and the sense I get from the people I know in grad school is that the combined MD/PhD routes tend to cut corners in terms of the rigors of their thesis.

When a lot of the older reviews found inconclusive evidence and his lab is primarily the one getting these positive findings, I'm a bit guarded in my analysis. I'd wait for other labs to publish findings consistent with theirs before making any definitive statements like you do.

Doctors and insurance companies are in the practice of selling you expensive and unnecessary drugs, premiums and medical procedures. They would never show you how to actually live a healthy life because it's against their best interests (their pocketbooks).

Alka-Saltzer cold tabs every 4 hours.
