It's still a good game, but the pacing, combat and storytelling aren't exactly cutting edge today...

Which would be a fair criticism if it were released today.

If you're gonna play Ocarina you better be playing the Master Quest version on GameCube tbh. Best way to play it.

Why isn't it fair by 1998 standards?

What the fuck does "dated" even mean anymore.

30 year old games like Super Mario Bros. 3 still play as perfectly as most modern games, just without being as flashy or gigantic

Not all of them do, pretty much everything on Nintendo 64 has aged horribly. I wouldn't recommend anyone play OoT unless it's the 3DS version.

Master Quest on the 3DS is much better. Damage is doubled, and it's mirrored. Makes it way better.

It was mirrored on gamecube as well.

3DS version is better just because of some QoL changes like the iron boots being an item and the ocarina songs showing up on the bottom screen if you need them.

It very much is. And it's old cantankerous old gamers looking through nostalgia glasses think otherwise.

Amazing game for its time. But that's about it.

Well yeah not every single retro game, but plenty of games that we masterful in their time are totally enjoyable today outside of the most spoiled of CoDbabbies.

What exactly about the original N64 makes it age horribly? The visuals? (Mind you, I don't even like Zelda that much and think OoT is one of the most overrated games of all time.)

Games absolutely can feel dated. Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is in my top 5 games of all time because I loved it when it came out. After getting used to the Skyrim engine and other games, though, i don't get much enjoyment from Oblivion anymore.

That's different, though. 2D platformers are basically at their peak, the only thing you can really improve on is the graphics. 2D platformers from 30 years ago dont feel dated because 2D platformers today play basically the same

Sprites look awesome no matter. Metroid Prime was amazing visually. But it won't ever make Super Metroid look not amazing too. Early 3D endevours look incredibly of their time because 3D graphics always improve on themselves. Whereas Limbo is just as amazing as most any SNES 2D platformer.

It is dated, especially visually. That being said, the core of the game is still pretty fun, albeit slow paced and a bit clunky, but I'd still recommend giving it a whirl.

With Samus Returns/AM2R, the ol' Grey Brick has recently completely died of poor aging. NES & GBC are next to go the way of the Atari Im afraid.

OoT was always over-rated, its a fine game but start with LttP.

But Skyrim is so much worse in basically every way except graphics...
