Okay so maybe not the shittiest but close. Houles grandfather was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer two weeks ago. One day he just couldnt breathe, they took him to the ER, had to drain a liter and a half of liquid from his left lung and since then he has had to go every 5 days to get it drained cause it fills up quick and the semi permanent surgery to fix it hadnt been scheduled yet.

Of course everyone is heartbroken, especially Houle. Last night we took him to the ER to drain it again, we explain the deal to the new doctor and he stares at us with this what are you talking about? face.

He asks why were saying he has cancer and why especifically terminal. Then he says that when he reviewed his file he found a test that said highly unlikely to be malignant.
By then its too late and the grandma and Houle are really fucking hopeful.
I asked the doctor if he saw the CT scan and the biopsy results and he just disregards me and says that the tests done on the fluid from the lungs say its not malignant.
He really drills it in how its not even close to being cancer.

Then he starts talking about how to treat the pleural effusion and a pleurex and blah blah, this he actually got right.

Houle is calling his mom about the news, theyre searching like crazy for the doctor who told them it was cancer to give him a piece of their mind, theyre talking about how when the grandpa gets out theyre taking him to his favorite restaurant to celebrate, the entire deal.

By 5 am we need to leave and the grandma stays with the grandpa. As soon as we get home she calls us crying saying the doctor just finally fucking found the CT scan and biopsy and confirmed it is indeed terminal cancer.

So now its like they have to go through the entire grieving process again. Its just shitty as hell.

I'm gonna guess he was either super young or super old and wanted to prove something. Sorry to hear, best wishes to you and Houle.

Thats the test he kept referring to. He said its not malignant, its inflammatory and I kept telling him to check the goddamn CT scan but I guess he was tired or annoyed or I dont know.
Either way, a patient comes in with an established diagnosis, with the tests to back it up and you start second guessing it without even reading the entire file? Ugh

I dont even know what to do and its what frustrates me the most. I get along with Houles family really well but seeing them this sad and going through this, its such an intimate moment and I feel like Im invading.

That's horrible. Why even risk getting hopes up like that.

The shittiest part was that they gave the grandpa some meds for the pain and he fell asleep thinking cancer was off the table. I dont even want to think how they broke it to him when he woke up.
