Not attacking you or your job because I know its more than this but can you explain why my thinking is incorrect --

Does "doing a script" mean you or a machine you use moved pills or some other sort of tablet from one container where there are lots of them into a smaller container to give to the customer?

Someday they'll be a great asset to us, but the technology is too expensive right now.

The prescription needs to be entered, processed through insurance (assuming insurance is available), counted, filled, labeled, and then has to be checked or verified by the pharmacist prior to being bagged. Occasionally extra steps are necessary, such as when something needs to be mixed or compounded.

On a refill, you can take out the entering, but the rest remains.

I'm sure it's a busy one, especially if it's a chain store with just one pharmacist. Poor fellow.

Seems like a decent amount of work when described this way.

And this is only mentioning everything running perfectly smoothly. There's always problems, whether that be we don't have an item in stock, someone is looking for a refill when their prescription is expired/out of fills, doctor's calling in with questions, nonstop phone ringing, and perhaps the worst issue - insurance problems.

Refill too soon, insurance requires a different manufacturer, PA required, item not covered, invalid code of some sort, etc etc. And it's the new year, so everyone has new insurance.

Are you a pharmacy tech?

I thought about going back to school for it once because here in FL it is required that I get licensed. I don't know about it now though after I read some comments online and heard some people in real life that told me that the job sucks.

I'm a pharmacist. It can be hard starting out, but a good technician can be the backbone of a pharmacy.

Do you get an actual lunch? My pharmacists just hope to wolf something down when they get a break in the action. And only one is on duty 3 days a week.

Depends. I didn't get anything today. But most days I usually have time to at least grab a snack.

Speaking as a medical student, no, they are not a pointless profession. They learn more pharmacology than us physicians and they serve as an important check to make sure a drug interaction doesn't get missed.

The actual disbursement of medication is only the superficial component of their job. You're missing the giant iceberg underneath of the cerebral component of the job.
