You werent free to do anything except breathe the air, he says; even to stand up required a guards permission. Mr Oriyama had to sit cross-legged much of the time, in some pain; and when we took a bath, the bums of all my inmates were dark like bedsores from sitting in the same position all the time. A common punishment for misdemeanours was solitary confinement, where Mr Oriyama had to sit facing the door all day long. Two people with whom he shared a cell separately hanged themselves after losing their status as well-behaved prisoners, he says.

Pretty bad.

The scariest thing is that when they arrest someone over there they don't even investigate, they don't even bother making sure they have the right guy. They just torture whoever they got in custody for weeks (including withholding his medications) until they sign a forced confession. Then they get convicted with that confession as the only evidence.

And then they go to a prison like that.

And when you're accused of a crime over there, it's basically scientifically impossible to get acquitted. A judge who acquits a criminal defendant will never ever get a promotion to an appeal court, and his career is basically in the gutter since he's now seen as a judge who defied the government (prosecution)

It sounds like a trifling thing but if you've ever actually been expected to sit that way for a couple of hours, you know it's really one of the most uncomfortable positions to spend that much time in.

It's really a social problem. People in Japan have a very hard time imagining that an innocent person can ever be accused of anything. When someone who is accused of a crime in Japan claims that he's innocent, the consensus among the population is that he has no remorse and he's refusing to admit to what he did.

There is just zero political pressure to do anything about it.

Japan is very proud of its 100% conviction rate. People aren't aware that it's entirely manufactured.

It's why Ace Attorney is popular in the first place. The series is a criticism of the Japanese legal system.

Yeah pretty much that

Life in Japan is tough

Kids who finish school and are about to get into the best colleges... the competition is excruciating. You literally get one chance at it.

Your entire life you have to conform to strict guidelines. The entire culture basically discourages anyone from being a free spirit or an individual. That's why the Tora-san films were so popular back in the day. Tora-san was literally the embodiment of an impossible dream

Yeah.

There's one part in Investigations 2 where they reveal that Manfred von Karma basically tortured a dude to force a confession from him, and it kinda shook me how real that felt.

Like the games are usually pretty goofy and silly, but that was just...damn.

Plus it illustrates how the concept of a prosecutor who values a 40 year win streak can seem kind of ridiculous to westerners, but to Japan it's a rather apt satire.

One of the reasons Wright has kind of this legendary status in game is because he has multiple acquittals. It's very rare for a defense attorney in Japan to have even one.
