I want to start with the original Japanese movies from the 50s.

Is there like a boxset or do I have to buy them separate? Are they on blu ray? Were they even realized outside Japan?

If you want to watch the original 1954 movie, look up the criterion collection on Amazon. IIRC, it's around 20 bucks.

Solid movie.

The original Godzilla is well preserved and can be found in a number of DVD releases. Unfortunately, the distribution rights to the sequels are all over the place and some are out of print. I'm not even sure if the second movie was ever released on DVD or Blu-Ray.

From what I understand, the rights to all but a couple films have been reconciled, so there might be some serious box set releases in the near future, but it can be kind of tricky to try and find some of the older stuff.

There are plenty of Godzilla box sets -- most of them containing the newer films -- but there's no real way to get the series in sequential order by going that route.
