Eighty dollars seems pricey in comparison to controllers for the other consoles and gens.

Contemplating buying a switch, but the system, a game and extra joycon will put me at $440 before tax. Are there any game multiplayer games yet? Maybe I don't need the extra joycon now.

Most multiplayer games let you use each individual Joycon as its own controller, so if you're only planning to play with one other person, you don't really need an extra set right now.

Also, if you do choose to buy another controller, I would recommend going with the pro controller, unless you plan on playing with 3 other people on a regular basis. It feels so much better than the Joycon, and it's also more convenient because unless you buy a special shell, you can only charge the Joycon when they're attached to the Switch itself.

Basically joycons have like, more features than a normal gamepad, so they're pricier because of that.

I dunno, don't have a Switch but Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 probably have split-screen multiplayer. So if you have people to play with then might as well buy the extra pair.

Good to know that you share the joycons and thanks for the tip about the pro controller. Hadn't considered that.

It's so awkward to use an individual joycon as a controller that I wouldn't even consider that a worthwhile feature.

My friends and I do MK8D and overcooked with the individual joycons all the time. It's surprisingly handy and comfy, especially when you have to carry significantly less than usual.

Also the Joy-cons have the NFC reader and the infrared detecting thing at the end of one of the controllers. The combined Joy-cons also have more buttons than a conventional controller actually
