Season 8 is an abomination and the ending somehow made it worse.

From what I read they originally wanted to kill off Dexter in the finale, but they got pressured into keeping him alive so they could bring the character back with another show if they wanted to. It makes sense because that ending really felt tacked on. All of a sudden he's a alive and living as a lumberjack somewhere.
