Like what the hell. Who thought this was a good idea or made any sense. You would think that bug or normal would the weakest type but ice types are by far the worst with no resistances.

With Fairy being strong offensively and defensively, they should have given a bone to Ice types and allow Ice to resist Fairy attacks.

Same here.

I blame Golem, Onyx, Rhydon, and Aerodactyl.

It took me until gen 4 with heart gold to finally realize rhydon was rock/ ground and not mono ground.

Well rock doesn't resist ice and gen 1 rocks like Golem and Onix shared ground type. The only other rocks where the fossils. Kabuto and Omanyte are Rock/Water, Aerodactyl is Rock/Flying(also would be weak to ice).

So yeah in gen 1 it would be easy to mistake rock being weak to ice since the rock types you would face are all part ground.

Avalugg is a pretty weird Pokemon to have as an ice type with all that defensive stat.

A lot of ice types have defensive stats. Also a lot of ice types are slow too.

Some examples.

Articuno: 95 Hp/ 100 Def/ 125 Sp Def with only 95 Sp Atk and 85 Spe.
Dewong: 95 Hp/ 80 Def/ 95 Sp Def. Both Atk and Sp Atk are 70.
Glaceon: 65 Hp/110 Def/95 Sp Def. Though it also has 130 Sp Atk but that 65 Spe.
Lapras: 130 Hp/ 80 Def/ 95 Sp Def
Cryogonal has 130 Sp Def with 80 Hp. Def is awful tho.
Regice: 80 Hp/ 100 Def/ 200 Sp Def
Walrein: 110 Hp/ 90 Def/ 90 Sp Def

There's very few strong sweepers who have ice type, because ice types have some of the worst stat allocation on top of their shitty defensive typing.

Rock is pretty bad defensively. Has some of the most common weakness. Grass, Fighting, Water, Ground.

A ton of Rock types are slow too so they aren't many great sweepers. You have Lyranroc-Dusk and Diancie-Mega as the only good offensive stat rocks. Tyranitar is good largely because it has decent bulk on top of being a sandstorm setter.

EDIT: Oh and Mega-Aero is good stat wise too, but no one really runs it because there are better megas.
And Nihilego being specially focused.

Ice has four weakness (All common) and one resistance.

Rock has five weaknesses (as you said, all common) and three resistances.

I'd say Rock is a little better than Ice in that regard though both are terrible. Poor Aurorus.

Except that a lot of ice types have odd stat allocations into defensive stats and lacking offensive power int he first place.

Steel isn't even that bad offensively anymore due to fairy being added to the game. Plus Steel has some really great offensive power houses.

Bisharp great counter to defoggers.
Aegislash when used right has 150 offensively and 150 defensively.
Kartana fast and has super high atk
Mega Lucario and Mega Metagross
Magearna
Scizor for it's Technician Bullet Punch.
