Early viewing estimates for Netflixs Bright have been released by Nielsen, which claims 11 million U.S. subscribers streamed the fantasy-action flick starring Will Smith in the first three days after the film was released. The numbers are likely to make executives at Netflix smile after the services first foray into big-budget filmmaking the film reportedly cost between $90-$100 million dollars was walloped by critics, even earning the toxic worst film of the year moniker in at least one case, marking another critical low point in director David Ayers body of work after garnering mostly negative reviews for Suicide Squad .

Movie critics are part of the establishment media and like their "journalist" counterparts are often tasked with disseminating propaganda disguised as objective analysis. It's an act.

I wonder where you go after a "straight to Netflix" movie. David Ayer clearly didn't do himself any favors with Suicide Squad, and while Netflix is better than "straight to DVD" it seems his critical performance hasn't improved.

Why are people surprised a movie about an orc policeman is getting bad reviews?

Because it starred Will Smith and the orc plot was an extremely thinly veiled excuse to do a movie on racism, and usually that kind of plot gets critical praise.

Does it make that much sense for Netflix to dump $100 million into a movie?

The reason this movie isn't getting critical praise is that it doesn't handle those themes well from what I understand.

does anyone else feel a "critic" of an artistic medium is a stupid idea? musical tastes are subjective, as are what one sees in a movie to begin with, and one has their own favourite genre of video games (assuming one counts it as an artistic medium)

i'm not sure how I feel about art (painting, drawing etc) with or without critics though. On one hand I don't think I know enough about art to comment on it and that there is a place for critics, but on the other I believe there is still more subjectivity to art, than there is objectivity. (i.e. what the artist wants you to see, compared to what you see from your perspective.)

edit: i have watched it myself, and in my opinion while it had a very heavy political correctness theme (which I felt did not matter much to the plot besides one scene where they find the wand, and the cops say to take out jakoby it did not seem like it was really an issue in the movie from there on out considering the two worked just fine, perhaps smith's acting falling flat was a key in why this felt more forced than an interesting plot thread) it was a fun ride with neat effects, and it does kind of lay out a world where perhaps netflix can do a series and expand the world more.

Arts seem completely and absolutely pointless if you can't have and discuss your opinions on it and that includes critical opinions.

Taste is subjective, but there ARE objective measures of movies that someone trained in the medium can evaluate. Things like narrative structure, plot cohesiveness, camera dynamics, clarity of audio, acting range, etc. Saying a movie is "good or bad" is a waste of time, but saying whether a movie is well made or not is something useful.

I agree with your statement; I meant moreso people look up to critics more than they should. Some people take critics word as law, or assume something is bad because a critic didn't like it. Some too, choose to argue that something is good because "it has positive reviews by critics, or by (specific critic)" instead of discussing what they themselves find good or bad.

Yes I agree, but many people simply agree with, or parrot what others say without trying to discuss what they themselves like about any specific piece. I am not saying critically analyzing something is wrong, just that people choose to simply look at other's analysis and parrot or paraphrase it rather than to critically analyze it themselves.

From what I've heard is that it's basically Training Day, with Fairy tale creatures.

I'm stupid. How does Netflix make money off of one off movies? Is it just them hoping for people to subscribe or do they make money from each stream?

A lot of people watched it because it was a Will Smith movie that's offered on a service they already get. Bright or anything of it's quality isn't going to make anyone continue their subscription. It had a few cool parts but it was overall a pretty shitty movie. Will Smith should be very embarrassed about what he's done.
