These are the compatibility notes I got:

The Thermaltake - View 31 TG ATX Mid Tower Case supports video cards up to 420mm long, but video cards over 278mm may block drive bays. Since the MSI - GeForce GTX 1080 8GB GAMING X 8G Video Card is 279mm long, some drive bays may not be usable.

Is this a major issue?

only if you're planning on using more hard drives for extra storage or RAID configs or something

Drive bays are the spaces where the hard disk drives and optical drives (dvd/blu-ray drives) can be placed.

a drive bay is just where you insert your hard drives (or sometimes the DVD/CD drive)
most cases allow you to insert 4-5 drives, but you probably wont be using that many drives

It's just the space in the case meant to hold drives. Hard drives (HDD), solid state drives (SSD), CD-drives, etc.

Pretty fucked up to put someone down for stepping outside their comfort zone and attempt to learn something by doing. Obviously they're going to learn some things along the way.

Especially considering having the technical knowledge of what a "drive bay" is is hardly necessary for the successful completion of a build.

Trim your neckbeard.

Depends. Problem could range anywhere from "you can't use all your HDD bays" (may be stuck with only one or two bays) to "you will have to disassemble the bay brackets in the case to fit the card"

I recommend just getting a bigger case. The former issue is not a big one, but the latter issue is a fucking pain that I wouldn't wish on anyone.

We're talking about being 1 mm over the recommend length. There is no way this will cause any problems at all.
