The Empire Strikes Back? After all, that story was not completed, like The Last Jedi. There is still another movie to complete things. We don't have the whole story yet.

There are other examples, were people mad back in the fifties because Gandalf died in the Fellowship of the Ring or Spock in the Wrath of Khan? Who came back in the next one...

I don't think people are outraged that The Last Jedi didn't complete the story. Rather, that it closed off too many plot threads for the sequel. What's left, really? Rey still needs to stand off against Kylo Ren?

But on the other hand that means whatever they pull with Episode 9 will be a surprise, at least.

I think that Episode IX will have some surprises, and hopefully the return of Lando.

The Empire Strikes Back?

A new hope has more in common with TLJ in regards to unresolved plots than esb does.

"Who is Obi-Wan? Why is he their only hope? If he was that important why does he just die? What happened to Vader? He's just floating in space. What becomes of Leia post Alderaan?"

The problem isn't unresolved plot threads, the problem is several unresolved plot threads from the previous movie were closed with no resolution. In ESB, the story was still primed to continue. In ANH it doesn't matter that much as all plots were contained in the same movie. People weren't mad about Snoke in TFA, they were mad about Snoke in TLJ.

Some people felt ESB didnt live up to the hype at the time, but it wasnt divisive like TLJ. It was a different time tho, no places to shitpost about movies all day

Yeah, it makes me wonder if back in 2005 when Myspace first came out if people were going in about Revenge of the Sith.

I am pretty big fan, I had my theories for the sequel trilogy, have they happened yet? No, but there is still another movie.

I know that people are upset about Luke Skywalker and that's why I referenced Gandalf dying in Fellowship of the Ring.

Should've gone with Zahns interpretation imo.

Shit, the new republic is still using the same mon cal cruiser and medical frigate in rotj, yet the first order comes out of nowhere with impressive fleets and star killers? What was the point of the pseudo star destroyers in the last jedi, anyway? There were a bunch of them yet never really played a tactical role at all. Maybe the new republic was just inept and deserved being overthrown.

Empire Strikes Back took a risk with serializing the story in anticipation of another movie. Not many movies did that sort of thing at the time, so it stood out and was actually kind of cool.

The Last Jedi definitely isn't doing anything new, so there's less reason for people to cut it any slack on any front.

The Resistance =/= The New Republic

The New Republic didn't want to drag itself into a war. The Resistance was quite literally Leia and her connections <_<

That makes even less sense, then. Who are the resistance even fighting for then? Its two rebel factions fighting while the republic conducts its business as usual? Why would they, the NR, even want to get involved? At what point does Leia say "you don't want my help? Fuck you then". I didn't think I could dislike the disjointed plot anymore then I already did...

They are/were fighting to keep the First Order from overthrowing the New Republic while the NR ignored a growing threat. <_<

Also the First Order isn't really a rebel faction. At least not in their own eyes. They're the remnant of the last legitimate power in the Galaxy. They're just trying to reclaim what they feel is rightfully theirs.

So, the FO enjoys enough support that the established government isn't interested in resisting them. The resistance ignores this and says they're bad guys, yet FO are villains? If republics are about the voice of the people choosing leadership I don't see why the resistance is resisting their own proposed rules... The new movies do a poor job explaining why they are so evil. Sounds like they're defending themselves, and the republic, from radical elements.

well yeah that's why they're the Resistance, not the Rebellion. They're resisting the First Order, not rebelling against them.

The New Republic knew they were too weak to go into open conflict with the First Order, which could gain the FO more backers if the FO was seen as a legitimate threat. If the NR can let the Resistance go off and do their own thing then the NR could claim that they still don't acknowledge the FO as a threat.

A bit of stretch of a metaphor: It's like how America (secretly) gives weapons to rebel groups(in this case the Resistance) in the middle east, to fight groups or countries America doesn't openly want to consider an enemy(in this case the FO), either because of the lack of desire of open war or not wanting to totally legitimize said enemy.

Here I was, thinking I could watch a movie and understand the plot based on what is onscreen. What a sap! Thanks, bro.
