The word received attention in Germany where it was seen as criticizing the immigration policies of Angela Merkel. According to the Chinese news site Guancha Syndicate, the word is an example of "Chinese values" exported to Western countries. People tend to focus on the issues that hit closest to home or impact them on a personal level. There's nothing new about this, and it's certainly not limited to Americans.
