What happens if the new guy isn't some kind of fighting prodigy?

Is the plan to just accidentally kill him right there?

Oops..i was...testing him guys... *awkward glances*

In tons of TV shows. Anime particularly too.

There will a new guy that people don't know about, and some other character will just unleash a crazy attack on him to 'test his abilities', when that attack would kill the person if it isn't dodged/blocked/etc.

To give a very famous pop culture example, it's similar to when Trunks attacks Goku in the Android Saga, except Trunks was actually holding back because he didn't want to hurt Goku.

In a lot of these scenes, it's the same Trunks/Goku deal, except there's no signs of holding back. Like they'll just be swinging a sword straight at the guy and he'll dodge. Like, you would've just killed him otherwise.

Remember when Gohan told Goku to go all out and that he is a shitty teacher/dad? And that Goku actually did listen to the advice of his then 10 year old son and trainee, and could have killed him?

Lol parenting

Well in DBZ it is at least established that the characters are durable, and Goku wasn't going to just disintegrate Gohan. He was only going to hurt him severely.

In a lot of other shows, death is basically guaranteed if the guy being 'tested' doesn't react perfectly.

There is an instance of this in a piece of media that I've recently partaken in, that mainly made me think of it(though I've seen the trope a lot before). Don't want to mention the piece of media though because it's pretty new.

"Wanted" (James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman) does this, but instead of McAvoy's character dying if he fails, it would've been Angelina Jolie who died instead (the "curve the bullet" scene)

Not "quite" the same but this sort of happens in Assassin's Creed Origins.

(Very early game spoilers!)

The main character takes his son to a cliff because his son is a wuss who is scared of everything and the dad says that he used to be a wuss too until his dad made him jump off a cliff. And that to get over all his fears, his son has to jump off the same cliff too.

However his son chickens out because he is such a wuss, failing to get over his fears. Then because of that wussing out, the son is captured and near instantly murdered.

If he had jumped the cliff like a hollywood movie test he would have survived

Same exact thing happens in the 1st Avengers movie.

When Thor first meets Captain America the very first thing he does is swing his hammer at him. When Captain America blocks the blow the shockwave was so powerful it leveled the forest around them. Why did he swing so hard at a dude he had no reason to believe was anything but an ordinary human. How did he know the shield would have protected him. Thor was gonna squish the shit out of Cap and the only reason why he didn't was pure luck.

Those are good examples.

Another good DBZ one is when Piccolo threw child Gohan at a mountain, and Gohan erupted with ki and blew the mountain up.

Sure, he knew Gohan had hidden power, but Gohan was otherwise a defenseless child who didn't know how to harness that power.

Piccolo could've been very well killing him.
