to "prolong the life" of customers' devices.

This was AFTER a tech company did some testing to objectively prove that they did it, forcing Apple to make a response.

Well I suppose that's one upside to my last update being 2015.10.01.

I dunno if LG/android does this anyway.

Android has a bunch of software options you can toggle on/off to conserve battery, but as far as I know they don't turn any of them on (or force them to stay on) based on device.

I'm out on the iphone this March when my contract expires with AT&T

God forbid I have some emergency and need to call 9-1-1, only to find my phone is so laggy I cannot execute the phone call.

They dont slow down as much as android

An android after 2 years is nearly unusable
An iphone after 5 years still works fine

I have the opposite experience. My mom's iphone got super laggy after about 2.5 years. My old Galaxy S4 lasted me a good 5 years before I replaced it, and I still could have used it for a while longer.

Is part of the reason why they are so hard to replace to contribute to waterproofing though?

Perhaps to a degree, but water resistant phones like the old Galaxy S5 had replaceable batteries.

Good point. The GS5 had a replaceable battery and an IP67 rating just like the iPhone 7. The IP68 rating is a little more difficult and makes a replacement battery more challenging in consumer hands. This is the rating for the GS7 and GS8 which I understand dont have replaceable batteries. They have special water resistant glue.

Basically been my experience. My galaxy broke so Im back on my iPhone 5s and its running fine, no problems at all. The android phone I had before the iPhone got so slow and just so awful before that 2nd year ended and thats why I went to iPhone. Should have stuck with them.

My S5 I got at launch still runs like a champ. Go through an Android phone and turn off all the unnecessary shit and they'll run great as long as the hardware isn't falling behind the times. Most people don't know how to keep their Android software clean though, and over time it gets bogged down with the bloat services on top of all the other shit they put on it.

I thought everyone knew this already? Whenever a new version of iOS is released googles trends show a massive spike of searches for "iphone slow" of other combinations of that same sentiment.

If you want to keep an iphone for longer than 2 years then you shouldn't update it ever.

Planned obsolescence. Just confirms what I've suspected on each of my iPhones since 2009.

I've switched over to Samsung, so I'll see how this goes. At least now I'm allowed the option to optimize or throttle whatever it is I want. The bloatware concern is a nonissue nowadays as they all can be disabled if not uninstalled.

It bugs me that in reporting this, no one in the media actually challenges it.

"You're steps still result in performance that leaves the end user disappointed. None of it is necessary however with a simple change of the battery which you discourage. Why will you not accept the solution that actually preserves performance of your product?

If slowing down your phones is not necessary, why do you do it?"

Some one please grow a pair.

They're doing this so high current spikes caused by sudden CPU usage don't cause the battery to undervolt and shut down your phone. But yeah they're still shit and they should show a message prompting the user to replace their battery when this is triggered.

Why in the hell would Apple want someone to swap out a battery, when there's more profit in swapping out the whole phone?

There's a reason the battery isn't (easily) user replaceable, and sometimes soldered in.

I've known this all the way back when I had the iPhone 3G. I can't remember if it was the 3GS or the one after that but as soon as it came out and I updated to the new OS my phone was barely usable. I haven't got an iPhone since.

If that's what you want, sure.

So long as suckers keep buying iPhones when their current ones get "slow", Apple will continue to make your iPhones slow, and laugh all the way to Foxconn and the bank.

Idk how that dude's android got slow after 2 years, and they had a note 8? Impossible, unless you went out of your way to fuck your phone with a hammer or something. I have an s3 I got a year ago for 100 bucks and it is fast and works exactly how I want it to at all times.

I've got a Leon that's i-don't-know-how old, and it does everything I need to do, reasonably well, with just the occasional overheat for some reason.
Also I can pop the back off and mess with the battery, SIM card, and MicroSD, pretty much at will.

Any decent Android beyond ones built for SDK 16 should work just fine still now. Any other case is either the phone being incapable of supporting the SDK that it was released around or the phone being abused.

I've used most of my Android phones for 3+ years though. Any time I changed was cuz my contract with the phone provider expired and I decided to switch phones

What's that

its called Battery Current Limit

limits CPU clockspeed based on different factors(including remaining battery % and the current the battery is able to supply)

I had a note 5
After 1 year the battery wouldnt last an entire day of normal use (sleep mode until lunch, 1 hour of web browsing, sleep mode home)
After 2 years the OS itself was laggy and unusable

I had this exact same issue on the htc one m8.

Don't even know how this is possible unless something about the update went wrong. Battery-wise, I wouldn't know too much about it.

There was one particular period in Android where the SDK too quickly preceded what the older phones can handle. I'm guessing it was during that period, but 2 years and the OS being laggy and unusable sounds like an update problem

Thats just my experience and most people i know experience the same. My sister was using an iphone 3g for the longest time and it was fine. My parents are still using iphone 5's and the battery lasts multiple days.
