The jump to lightspeed tactic.

In the Star Wars galaxy, there exists a concept called the Interdiction field. See the wiki link here:
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Interdiction_field

tl;dr - ships are capable of generating gravity walls to pull vessels out of hyperspace and prevent them from entering it.

The First Order probably didn't turn on their interdictor fields because they were baiting the Resistance to escape using hyperspace and then deliver the final blow when they run out of fuel.

But that scene where the sound cut out during the explosion was probably the most visually appealing scene in the film.

Do you think Rian was tapping into the depths of the EU for a technical explanation for why such a powerful tactic wouldn't be used over and over? Or do you think he's just kind of a hack who put something in the movie because he thought it would look neat without considering the implications.

I think we all know the real answer

I haven't seen it yet but this just sounds like a huge ripoff of interstellar/gravity. I have now problem though as it's what would really happen in space.

Wasn't that the Picard Maneuver, to warp a short distance to throw the enemy off? It wasn't a suicide run of course, Picard was smarter than that.

Anyways yeah, interdictors were a thing. They even dedicated an episode of Rebels to it, and were featured in the old Empire At War video games from back when.

Honestly don't know why people think it's any sort of viable tactic. A shit is expensive, would be destroyed in the process, and you would kill everyone on board. If you took the time to evacuate, the ship probably wouldn't last long enough, or at least the hyperdrive would be damaged before the attempt could be made.

It's a common sci-fi cliche. The same scenario has been used tons of times especially in Stargate.
