A girl is raped and becomes pregnant? R: No abortions, they'd rather her suffer.

Fetus tested and found will have horrible genetic disease where it will live seven years in pain with physical and mental issues? R: It must not be aborted at all costs no matter what.

Mother can't get a job that can/will pay for insurance for the kid? R: Our country can't afford free health care, think of the businesses and rich.

Mother's house is robbed at gunpoint. She now has a dead son and massive hospital bill to deal with. R: We send our thoughts and prayers , but no on could've predicted a rare, isolated, one of a kind, incident like this. I know you want to have the guns discussion but it's too soon you rest.

Watching TV in her small crappy apartment, years later she sees the man has been caught and she sheds tears of joy. However, later she gets a call from the police. She does not want the man to die so that he will suffer.

R: Sorry, we have a two other confessions from murders that he's committed and won't need you. *Hangs up* Poor Old lady, this son of a bitch needs to die. ADA: What about the two other confessions possibly being coerced? R: Just don't mention them, unless you want this poor old woman to die without seeing justice

100% faulty argument. Republicans want Americans to be able to defend their home with guns. Liberals are the ones who want Americans to be defenseless against home invasions.

Liberals are the ones who want Americans to be defenseless against home invasions.

the bigger problem imo is the idea that home invasions are common enough to warrant a weapon for this purpose. that's on the NRA moreso than either party though

There's FOUR MILLION burglaries every year and there's somebody present in the home for a MILLION of them! A QUARTER MILLION PEOPLE ANNUALLY are the victims of violent crime from home invaders! Danger from home invasions is a thing. If you want to talk about something not worth worrying about, we can talk rifle murders.

I'm assuming you're using this link or something derivative from it to get your statistics? http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/ascii/vdhb.txt

So yes, 28% of home invasions happened with a household member present.
In about 7% of these instances was someone the victim of a violent crime
It appears that having a gun during a break in puts you more at risk than not having one. They want your stuff, not your life (almost always).

The only argument I can think of to combat these statistics is if you think it's reasonable to protect property with life.

Home invasions happen more than house fires. Do you have smoke detectors? Are smoke detectors also just NRA propaganda?

I don't really have a problem with people owning guns. I think just wanting a gun is reason enough.
I just think the argument about home invasions is crappy, that's all. There are better alternatives to a gun in a home invasion, and prevention would be even better.

Wow, how heavy were those goal posts when you moved them? You said home invasions don't happen often enough to warrant action, I pointed out that a million people annually are in their homes when somebody breaks into it. Given that a quarter million people annually end up getting injured from home invaders, it's perfectly reasonable to be worried that a person who breaks into your house is going to hurt you. You know a really good way to stop somebody from hurting you? Shooting them. You know a really good way to stop somebody robbing your stuff? Shooting them.

Non response. Surrender accepted.

Home invasions are indeed a thing, you were wrong in your initial claim because you didn't know what you were talking about, and I'm right. I mean, a quarter million people per year end up victims of violence from home invaders. That's not significant to you?

We're the ones who want people to be able to defend themselves against hostiles.

I don't even know what your problem is.

There are what, 300 million people in America? And every year we have 1 million households broken into where people are present.
That's not a significant amount of people. So my initial post was correct, not a goalpost moved.
And is ~250,000 hurt from invaders significant? Well, out of 300 million people, not really. Hell, if all the people who were victims of violent break-ins were the 100 million gun owners it would still be a quarter of a percent of Americans who are victimized by intruders.

I literally said people should own guns if they want. Just don't use the home invasion argument because most burglaries are when people aren't home, and that evidence suggests that the presence of a gun increases the likelihood of harm against the home owner.
