I mean sure, it could be a simulation, but that would imply that there's a reality outside the simulation. Who's to say that reality isn't a simulation also, and so forth?

Nothing about the argument precludes there from being multiple "layers" of simulation. And that's kind of the point isn't it? A simulation sufficiently complex where it would be impossible to tell if it was a simulation from within.

Of course, it's not really a falsifiable question, so it's really nothing more than a philosophical thought.

That there a potentially countless simulations and thus the chances of you living in the real world over a simulation is incredible low.

Well we're either;
In the real world.
We're the final rung of the "countless" simulations. Which is equally likely to being in the real world.
Or we're not the final rung of countless simulations, are they're are aliens out there running their own simulations, are we're just extra data.

Without any direct evidence, "real world" makes the most sense and is the simplest answer.

it's unverifiable and has no immediate impact on life
it also avoids the bigger question of what started it all. assuming we're in a simulation, and it's irrelevant how many layers in we are, what about the non-simulation universe? what started it?
it's just pushing it away. like people who say that God has always existed, that aliens created life on Earth, or that the big bang was preceded by another universe's big crunch -- it just pushes back to a point where we're still stuck with the question of "what started everything to begin with?"

but it doesn't really matter. we have no control over the truth regardless of whether there's a god, a simulation, nothing, or some other option
