Hand jerked and the ball bobbled.

In any other league, pee wee, high school, or college, that's a catch.

But the NFL is hard mode baby.

Ground can't help you gain possession. It was obviously not a catch by league rules.

Defenders never touched him, so he was never technically "down" according to the rule book

He also didn't take enough steps after reception to clearly establish possession prior to his forward progress.

Only counts if possession was established prior to going down, which it wasn't.

I don't understand how you can watch him catch the ball with both hands and a firm hold and think he doesn't have possession. Just because he doesn't cradle it into his body doesn't mean he doesn't have control.

Determining possession isn't "well he sure looks like he has the ball". It has very clearly defined requirements. The whole point of these rules it to eliminate bullshit subjectivity.

He didn't establish forward progression with two steps, and the ball hit the ground in the endzone prior to the rest of his body. Incomplete pass. In order to argue in favor of the Steelers, you have to be arguing against league rules.

They had enough time to go for it the dumb thing was fake spiking and throwing a slant into trriple coverage instead of trying a fade then tying it up and going to OT.

The problem is that he was falling down in the process of making the catch. He lost control of the ball when he hit the ground, so it should be an incomplete pass.

If he had caught the ball, landed on both feet, then jumped into the endzone, it would have been a touchdown no matter what happened when he hit the ground.

Treat the process as having 3 steps

1.) Ball hits hands
2.) James brings arms into chest
3.) James reaches across goal line

Step 2 WAS him securing the ball.

Step 3 was a football move.

Pats are the fucking greatest.

If you had a coach like Belichick to teach your players how to hold a ball, you wouldn't have to whine and complain the morning after gameday.

It's no accident when the Pats come out on top.

Yeah, but he was falling down in the process of catching the ball, which is why they called it incomplete.

That's not how the NFL rules it. He never 'became a runner', thus his catch and fall to the ground is all part of the catch. The catch is something that is occurring throughout the entire thing, and unfortunately for him, the ball is on the ground and out of his possession for part of the catch.

If he had became a runner, and then stretched out and did the same thing, and bobbled it, it wouldn't have been called an incomplete pass, because he would have moved beyond the catch phase.
