If you are still at the Asylum demon then I would suggest starting over and making a pyromancer, it will make things easier. As some one else said, don't put points into resistance, it's worthless. When you first start the fight with him, attack as you are falling down and it will take a huge chunk of his health, then just hit him with the fireball or your axe

I've not even gotten to the Asylum Demon. I'm struggling with the zombie enemies, and I can't even kill the armoured zombie. That's why I think there must be something obvious I'm missing.

don't get greedy with hits

don't become overly reliant on your shield (learn to dodge)

take your time to explore

dont be afraid to lose souls when you die, it's honestly not a big deal because there are enough to go around and eventually your guy will become pretty powerful anyway

dont just run into rooms

learn how to pull enemies so you can fight them one on one

other than that just have fun, it's a great franchise

dark souls 1 has a bit of an archaic mechanic where you can only roll in four directions. be wary of that, and generally, rolling backwards is the best way to avoid harm.

secondly -- dark souls has four tiers of weight class: light, medium, heavy, and havel. i don't remember the exact numbers for dks1 - sorry - but wearing lighter gear will give you more invulnerability frames on your rolls. i ran with a medium build on my first go -- i think light builds have it easier. heavy builds have a 'thud' when you try to roll and havel builds can't roll. try playing around with your gear.

also try to find the knight guy if you haven't already. he'll give you a heal.

Ok here is some advice that I had to use when I first started, and use it until you learn the enemies moves. Just wait for the enemy to act, and then react. Let them make the first move. So with the armored dude, hold your shield and let him smack it, and then attack him. Just be patient. Let them attack, and then react. Watch later on in the game using this strategy tho, because obviously some of the bigger enemies are going to be harder to block with a shield because there attacks are going to take up so much stamina. Once you get used to it, I promise you will look back on this and wonder how you were ever struggling. Eventually you'll be parrying enemies left and right. But for now, keep your shield up, and from here you have 2 options. Either tank the hit with your shield and then attack, or keep your shield up, circle around the back and backstab him. Tons of enemies in the first dark Souls are very susceptible to backstabs

I don't HAVE an actual weapon.

the only thing I have is a crappy shield and a spell that's greyed out.
