Or the SaGa games on the Gameboy. There are DS remakes for 2 and 3, with English fan translations. Anyone familiar with these? Should I play the remakes of 2 and 3 or stick with the GB versions?

I played the DS remake for 2 since it's one of my favorite GB games and the DS remake is absolutely 100% worth playing and forget the GB version entirely.

I can't comment on 3. I never got far in the GB version (it was just a little too weird) and never played the DS version.

by the way, fair warning about the 2nd game on DS

There are several optional content monster tower type things, these tend to give good rewards IF you do them as soon as they're unlocked. (harder stuff with better rewards unlocks later). If you wait until the end to do them, most of the early shit has useless loot and it's a waste of time. There are two modes, and in one of the modes you can take the current NPC guest in with you including ISIS so keep that in mind
