Critics thought the movie was overall enjoyable, so it's given a positive review.

Fans can focus more on certain things that sour their opinion as a whole, so it's given a negative review.

Nothing about this is odd.

The average rating is 8.2/10, still too high IMO.

Also Chris Stuckman gave it an A-, fucking fanboy/shill should no longer be taken seriously.

Honestly, the movie had tons of issues. I can't see how critics would rate it so highly.

i'm inclined to go with this.

star wars as a whole seems to be put under way more intense scrutiny by viewers compared to anything else and every "fan" review should automatically be adjusted with a +3 star rating.

And the ones that aren't paid, I assume a few aren't, don't want to be blacklisted by Disney.

Star Wars fans are pretty bad in terms of critiquing quality. Most of them still love and appreciate the prequels when they're garbage movies. TLJ was the best Star Wars since the original trilogy

The implication that those who hate the sequels probably love the prequels is unfounded.

It's definitely not unfounded. Rotten tomatoes user score of ep1 and TLJ are the exact same. These movies are no where near the same in quality. Maybe it's a nostalgia thing, but the original trilogy suffered from the same shit the new movies are being criticised over, and the original trilogy are a beloved set of film.

All that says is they disliked both TPM and TLJ.

I go into every Star Wars movie looking to have a good time-- not looking for faults-- but TLJ made me feel uneasy for a couple of reasons. First, Canto Bight... the CGI triggered my prequel PTSD. Second, Rian Johnson scuttled several of the arcs that JJ set up to span three movies. It feels like they're just making it up as they go now, and that's troubling to me.

Isn't JJ coming back for the next movie? Or is that after Episode IX? If so he'll probably have to do some course correcting

JJ is now writing and directing Episode IX, yes. It's going to be fascinating to see how he responds to the challenge ahead of him.

What's weird though is that I feel like any speculation about Episode IX now has to begin by analyzing the writer/director, more than the existing film itself. TLJ sets a precedent that any character or foreshadowing could be a complete red herring. Rian was given a ton of leeway to go his own direction and he made some pretty sharp turns. Watching TFA and TLJ almost back-to-back, I felt very aware of Rian's hand steering the plot.

I'm kinda shocked they went into this without a clear plan nor sense of cohesiveness from one to the next

That's what producers are for... Kathleen Kennedy. What was she doin

She said that she would give directors room to do whatever they wanted, and I guess she meant it... sort of. She also ordered an extensive restructuring of the end of Rogue One, yanked Han Solo away from its directors when she felt it wasn't working out, and put JJ back on Episode IX, so... I don't know. I think that most of those decisions are going to look really smart in retrospect.

As far as them going in without a cohesive plan though... I'm not a fan of that approach. I prefer a carefully-planned story that I can revisit again and again and enjoy the beauty of its construction. TLJ certainly surprised me, but that trick only works on the first viewing.
